Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800s

Re: Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800's

Prospector or assayer/refiner. Maybe an innkeeper, saloon keeper when old age set in.

As a saloon keeper, I'd listen real close to stories of robbers loot being buried and hang loose for weeks before digging it up for myself and relocating it.

I would want some blacksmiths skills for picking locks if I were ever arrested.

My great-great grandfather made horse and buggy carriages for a living. I thought of that as being an interesting occupation in the mid eighteen hundreds along with stage coaches.

hey gang,
I would like to think I did something EXCITING..... But I have a feeling I would have been a bartender/gambler in a boomtown like Dodge City, Abilene etc. I would have most likely been a baaaaaaddddd gambler, so it's behind the bar I go. ;D ;D ;D But I would have been there when the gunfights started, and ended. I would have been there when the prospector " needed " another drink ( and I would get the map ). Of course I would have been working with all the " best " ladies of the town. And I may have been successful enough to eventually own my own bar... and ladies ;D ;D ;D ;D

Re: Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800's

an even better question is what did your ancestors do? I pulled up some census files my GGG-grandfather was in the Civil War from 1863 to 1865 a month after arriving from Ireland then became a fireman in 1882. A big city fireman in the 1880's was probably an interesting job.

Re: Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800's

I would own a Bordello man that would be fun.

Re: Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800's

A bank robber if I was lucky but probably a pig farmer in Iowa. :-\

Re: Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800's

Probably be a trapper and hunter and live like Robert Redford did in Jeremiah Johnson.

I'd fly a Starship !

Re: Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800's

Stone/brick mason until the Great Unpleasantness and then I'd have enlisted in the NC Volunteer CS unit for my county and fought to stay alive long enough to make Sgt at least, then muster out and lay bricks until the late 30s when I die of old age. Buried in a simple grave denoting my rank and battles fought and maintained perpetually by the UDC.

Coming from Western Wisconsin I always thought working on a Mississippi river boat would have been an interesting way of life. Awesome scenery too!

Running with Jesse James, remembering where he stashed his loot for one thing!
Owning a Saloon and a Brothel
Town Marshall
Town Sheriff
Town Major
Town Judge

Gold Miner
Blacksmith making weapons

There is so much more, but my list would be way too big!

Re: Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800's

I would probably be working for the railroad, like my grandfather did. Maybe an engineer or fireman. Also an inventor, trying to make life easier for the rest of the world. Rockhound

Re: Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800's

Wow what a great topic.
Um, the 1800s saw so many changes.

Perhaps a sailing master transporting goods. ( I was never a long haul truck driver, but like sailing ).
A "Blacksmith" inventing and building things. ( Did that for many years ).
Telegrapher might be nice.
Railroads engineer.

Thanks folks for the vids on the song. Loved that.
Maybe a troubador if they had them then.
I seem to recall a fellow named Robert? Service that went to the Alaskan gold strike and made many a good song.
I doubt if that paid much. LOL

Presently keeping food on the table doing carpentry and painting.
Probably little different back then. Maybe more fumes...
Prospecting sounds like a fine way to loose a few pounds... been there, done that !
I've kept horses before, but don't care for 'em that much. A lotta work, every day.

Re: Your Occupation If You Lived In The 1800's

I'd want to be a handyman/woodworker on a farm.

Hell, I want to do that now.
