UPDATED Pics so they are forum friendly. I was using photbucket before and now know its a no no. Thanks Don H!

Man what a day. Decided to go out after work for a few hours to pound some fields i've been detecting for a while now. Decided to concentrate on the perimeters of the fields and wound up hitting pay dirt with my first ever spanish silver AND my oldest coin all at once. I though it was a gaming token (I didn't find anything else all day). It was an honest 10+ inches down but the explorer sniffer her out real good. Still can't believe Im holding something thats 303 years old. Colonial silver at its best! Man this thing is a beaut. :o Thanks for looking!

Re: 303 Year old Silver!!

Amazing. I don't think California has anything that old around here. NJ seems like a great place to find it all :headbang:

Might as well get greedy Jim, forget 1600s, shoot for 1500 like Bill D in Viriginia has done. Actually, my son found a 1595 French Douzain, but such a thin coin, with hardly any identifiable detail, but hey, you never know what will pop out of Mother Earth...........

I checked on your coin for anything of special interest and it does have a die crack but for Spanish coins, unlike American coins, it really makes no difference. (Not designated by die variety ) Was told the main thing with spanish silver is year, type and what mint it was made at...........

I also have a 1500s Douzain, and just barely broke into the Spanish 1600s. (1699) If you can dig 1708, 1600s will happen, just a matter of time.

You need to attachment them properly with the tool provided, photobucket & other sites do not count when trying for the banner. I'm sure once you have done it properly, it will be up there  :icon_thumright:

Re: 303 Year old Silver!!

What an amazing find and in such good condition. Having pulled a number of coins out of the earth I find them often badly worn through use or damaged by fertilizers in the case of copper ones. It's nice that the silver and gold ones come out looking nice. You guys in CA oughta be able to pull some old Spanish coinage up too. There were plenty of Spanish missions around back in the day. Do your research and dig! I found a 1/2 reale a few weeks ago that was almost unrecognizable. Worn away to almost nothing. I'll keep looking.Congratulations on your find. I hope you'll treasure it and make it an heirloom.

Update the pics to forum friendly version. Photobucket is not good for the site sorry. :icon_thumleft:

Unfortunately the demand for Spanish silver coins is much less than US coins, as I found with my extremely rare 1789 Half Reale. It is only worth a few hundred dollars even though there are around a dozen known to exist.

Neil this coin may have made the banner early If I knew the rules for not using photbucket. :-\ Its not worth a whole lot but our area we dig is from the 1680's tops. So its a pretty neat find. Possibly a settler dropped it back in the day. Can't wait to get out when this rain goes away. Im starting to love this minelab. Shame im borrowing it from mom til mine is fixed :tongue3:

Nice little old present you found there Jim. Arty
