A couple of "Classics"

I have been trying to get one hunt a week in if I can and here are my meager finds from the last two hunts. Most of the time was spent battling greenbriars and not swingin! The soil in those areas have not been kind to my copper finds lately, time to find some sugar sand sites again. :D

The 1808 Classic Head was nice to find since it was found at a secondary backup site, the one I got my 1793 Flowing Hair LC at and the Union Greens button. I was pleasantly surprised to get a large button and a flattie I missed in previous hunts and the 1808 was a gravy find.

Today I went to the same area but this homestead I call the "Greenbriar" site. My legs are torn to shreds and I wear protective pants and still get nailed! I managed to squeeze from this site a 1835 Classichead Half Cent, a possible knee buckle and one small flattie button.

Did pick off the first tick of the year from my clothes, which is surprising, since it has been so warm lately I expected a lot more than just one.

My son just emailed me, he got in a quick hunt on his way home from work and his T2 came thru for him again at a pounded site, he got a worn down William III Halfpenny and on Saturday, while hunting at a millsite near our house that we have pounded for over 20 years, he found a 1907 Barber dime on the surface!. :icon_thumright:

Re: A couple of "Classics"

glad to see some good stuff coming out of hunted sites :headbang: have you been back to the coin spill site lately? :o

Re: A couple of "Classics"

Not bad Don! Those old sites are always holding something back

Re: A couple of "Classics"

very nice Don! ticks are taking over the woods up here.it's crazy! :tard:

Re: A couple of "Classics"

Nice coppers. :icon_thumright: The Flowing Hair has eluded me.

99% tick free formula:
Lay your clothes outside the night before and spray them with permethrin http://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Permet...-24-Ounce/dp/B001ANQVYU/?tag=treasurenet01-20. It will last on your clothes for up to 12 washes but I respray every 5 washes.

Spray your skin with deet during your hunt.

I used to never go in the woods to detect now I don't think twice.

I have thought about going back to the silver spill site, but I think both the son and I have hunted the place rather hard, and finds have petered out, so will give it a year or two to "change", seems like the woods are always different after a few years, and hope some goodies are still there to be found.
That site was great for coins, but not for relics and buttons, rather strange, think we found more coins than buttons there, or close to it.

I need a nice virgin site in sugar sand, where the coppers come out of the ground with smooth surfaces and only need a light cleaning to remove what little dirt there is on it. Those are sites dreams are made of.

I have been spraying my boots, socks and hunting pants for year, However, when the weather gets too warm, sweating and sprayed clothing is not a good thing, so therefore I fore go the treated clothing and stop hunting for the most part when ticks and especially chigger season is in full swing.

I figured you guys had been over it a few times.. There were some very sandy sites in VA but the coppers were almost always toasted. I think the sandy soil there was very acidic :dontknow: even the silvers got fried occasionally

anyway, looking forward to future hunts.. hope you find a virgin :headbang:

Re: A couple of "Classics"

You always seem to get your coppers Don. It seems like you dig more coins than buttons. But I guess that's a good thing, right? Nice hunt!

Re: A couple of "Classics"

That's some really nice stuff that you found, but you totally missed it.
There is a nice bike to be had out there!

Re: A couple of "Classics"

Looks like a peacefully place to look around. Nice digs.

Re: A couple of "Classics"

Nice Don, I can't tell for sure on your buckle but I think this one I have would be getting close to what it may have looked like.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:
