302guy, you've got the pyschology figured out! Your example is a type of "... do you need/want more" type thing. But yes, the psychology is the same when it comes to the "can I detect?" questions. And it works like this: the mere fact someone is standing there asking "can I", presumes that a) something is inherently wrong with your chosen activity (damaging, or evil, or .....) that you had to ask, to begin with (lest why else would you be asking if it were innocuous?), and b) that their princely sanction was needed from them (lest why else would you be asking, if this didn't need their approval?).
Thus a lot of times, we merely dictate our own "no" answer. In the same way as your example, of "dictating more work to do", because he asked, and put that ball in someone's court, to "come up with things for him to do". Good example.
