Another Gold Ring Today

Got out for my second day off today, hit the same beach as yesterday, pulled nothing but clad for the first couple hours, then got a very deep signal which turned out to be a ring. I thought it was silver at first, as it came up black, but it felt way too dense and heavy to be silver. Scratched it slightly and sure enough it was gold. Polished up very nice. I don't know the karat as it isn't marked, I will need to get it tested, it weighs 9.6 grams.

Has anyone ever found a gold ring that has come up black?

Wow, nice! I'm thinking this ring is also 10k. Not only was it black but was also encrusted with some sand, so figure it was lost a very long time ago, potentially decades. The fact it polished to a shine fairly easily means it wasn't chemically altered by the salt water, while a silver or copper ring would have been (just look at the state of the coins). Do you have a pick of that 10k ring shined up?

10K can turn a dark color.

Congrats on your hefty, old gold ring! that's a beauty ! Could also be higher than 10k, and possibly was in the water pre 1906, when Karat marks were mandated for jewelry.

p.s. What's also really cool is the contrast of the polished gold with tarnished gold within the engravings. Took the sea many years to leave you with that effect. Something a human couldn't have done unless they painted it in. Testifies to its' age.

That is a beauty! I'm guessing from the 50/60s ....., cleaned up nice also!

I've dug 10k,14k and 18k stained. Some from the early 1900's to the late 60s.... Has a lot to do with the gold mix and the surrounds. 10k is the most likely to stain, 14k sometimes then 18k is very rare.. I even have one gold ring that was rusted and I though it was junk, got home seen a glimmer of gold.. cleaned up like any other stain gold. Guessing it was right next to a piece of iron. I have many of clean / dirty shots.. just a few..

Lower carat gold 10k....is often like this in my area !!....even higher carat gold thats been down along time can sometimes be like this !!
