Detector(s) used
Garrett AT PRO
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I think all the AT haters bash on the AT PRO because it is such a capable machine at half the cost of their 900-1200$ machines. Don't be hating

I would love to buy the AT Pro, for the price it seems like a steal. However, I also hear a lot more grips flying around about quality issues and how the detectors simply don't last very long, so I hesitate to pull the trigger on one. I guess it's one of those 'everyone can't be wrong' situations....Instead I'm looking into a Whites MXT Pro that has a SUPER solid reputation of quality.

There are some very successful folks out there that own and video thier ATG and ATG hunts. Whites are bulky and heavy for a old guy like me. I look at coil options, battery type, and what my friends are using. I wish my detector was more backpack friendly, it gets most of the character marks from bushes. I prefer more plastic around the coil areas, the guys who build em have been doing so for years. You still are going to get a bad unit every now and then, I think is just rough handling in the mail. The real test is hunting with a friend and see who machine out performs who's.

Well, it's nice to know if you do get a lemon by chance, the customer service is one of the best out there, and they treat their customers like royalty. I absolutely love my Garrett!

If you want a lesson watch his videos . I think Garrett was so impressed they asked to go hunting with him. He is atpro all the time. People say things do not last in water have never hunted water.

I love his videos, he uses a T2 also.

Casca I cant hold back I disagree a bit, I think whites are light and very well balanced I know the m6 and spectrum both are so light its very strange actually, not any way bulky or heavy.

Gleaner, Im used to seeing the mxt here. It looks heavy, but I dont own one. I try to get out and stay out as much as I can. I know if Im finding targets, I dont notice the weight any way.

As for customer service. I disagree.

Ok, you haters have done it now! You forced my hand. I ordered an AT Pro package today. You kept talking and talking till I just couldn't take it any longer. I have GOT to see what all this fuss is about so I can legally throw my 2 cents in this discussion. I can tell you now, you owe me a few hundred US dollars if I am unsatisfied, so start saving your clad just in case!

LOL! That's funny! You won't be disappointed and will have a great time with your new machine!

Casca,
I wish my detector was more backpack friendly.

Well look at the ATX. It folds up to the size of the coil and comes in it's own pack, but beware of sticker shock. Frank... 111-1 profile.webp

Great choice, and if you turn out NOT liking it I'd bet you could recoup almost all your money selling it as "used/like new".

My advice, start from day one using the iron audio feature.
If your gonna have a learning curve ya might as well start at the highest level, that way everything else below it is already "learned".

The iron audio feature is the bread and butter of the AT Pro. Extremely useful!

I always buy the most expensive detectors...usually a couple of them..just to make the AT users jealous. Then I swing them 12" over the ground and run as fast as I can to show how I have mastered the technique.

I had an AT Pro and loved it. It was great but I saw this little thing out there called a CTX 3030, so I sold my AT and put the money towards it and BAMMMM!!!!!!! I find more stuff with this thing and over the same ground I hunted out with the pro. You get what you pay for and since the pro was all I owned the transition was easy. It discriminates much better and it is crazy stable in salt water or anywa here for that matter. Thanks for letting me chime in. Jason

Totally agree with ^kk4ces^^ I'm definitely a Minelab fan specially when your looking at a BBS or the FBS. But its worth the pretty penny it is, once u find that ugly penny to sell that it's is worth. But for being cost effective being the AT PRO is submersible up to 10 feet you cant beat that for what you pay compared to other submersibles.

Because he can be on any thread he wishes that is why. The ATP was my first Garrett. I like it for what it is and the price. I hunt in creeks with it. Aqua Chigger on youtube helped me pull the trigger on one.
If you want to see one hunted with well check out his videos.

I do not know anyone who showers with their machine. That is childish talk. My only draw back so far is the recovery speed on sweeps. I tend to hunt fast and when I hit a target I like to sweep it fast and not wait for the processing to catch up. It has slowed me down some but it has also recovered targets I missed with fast beep machines like Tesoro.
Water can actually save many targets by keeping them wet compared to being in a field with fertilizer. Even iron in mud can come out in very good shape.

Well running the F75, it goes a little faster and a little deeper so all you atp guys are just gleaning for me lol. Some of my favorite hunters run the atp, and they run T2 and F75 also. Now the ATX is out, I am waiting for the reviews. But I dont see many. Must be another buggy machine. I will say the customer service is pretty good with Garret. I can honestly say I will never by another NEW First Texas anything, I dont care how good their machines are, if the warranty is crap, might as well buy something else. The warranty does not transfer with First Texas products. Garret is great about fixing stuff. No matter how easy you are, things go out. Im going to have to buy a new coil for the F75. I do have issues with some claims about the depth and capability's of the ATP. I do make fuyn of all you ducks and your waterproof atp's lol. My beef is not with you guys who bought a atp cause he seen it on a tv show lol. But the hype, the detectors all work off the same science. Even Si on Duck Dynasty put out some Treasure Commander detectors, I like the specs, and they are affordable. ATP better watch out, Treasure Commanders are coming.

Thats when the hobby gets fun, you got to bend over and pick something up every now and then. Be sure to show em a ring before they leave lol. It really dont work that way, buts its fun to do.

I am looking at the ATX, and its a PI whoo hooo. I like the two coil system it comes with in one package. I have been saving my rings and necklaces, one day maybe Frank. I woner how deep it will go, and if it can track a heavy mineral vein or id backfill?

Sending pull tabs and bottle caps to a park near you. If you figure out a way to make money on em your all set.
