BTW,Thom;'old sentinel'dropped in for an unannounced 3 hr afternoon visit today.Upshot of the afternoon conversation was that I was doing a fine job of teaching grandkids about fishing and shooting rifles at 1,000 yards but they were a little young to get too interested in trees.You called it right ,again,Thom.

I just want to thank everybody for posting the pictures. Though i am a history hunter, not a TH, these pics I hope will really help educate my eyes when i am out hiking. In particular I have a theory there should be a spanish trail in a certain area.
It will be interesting to find out if I am right. These pics will help me recognize any signs along it. Don't expect to find treasure just an old trail to known places.

Jim,
Apparently you were given a kind warning.
The kind given to a good neighbor.
Take your time and get to know the guy, and let the grandkids get to know him as well,
He is offering you an opportunity of a lifetime here.
In the end he may only have you and yours to pass this legacy to.
Hope you can see it the way it was laid out.
Being from old country stock as I am,
I see right off how the old timers act and offer their selves and their time.
This guy is lonesome and craving someone in his life to pass his knowledge to.
You will have it all if you (kind of adopt him) let him do it on his terms.
I'm jealous, LOL

My 7yr old grandson sat for the afternoon visit listening to the old stories out of the big bags and got to pull a couple out of his small bag that were well received.
Problem I'm gonna have/not gonna have if he shares sentinal knowlege with me is he's gonna put me on my honor to guard this.Integrity is the only thing I have preserved in my misspent life.I could morph from a searcher to a watcher in this area of the country.Bittersweet....Know what I mean...
Thom,you're gonna have to quit reading my mail.His father was a surrogate grandfather/buddy of mine.He's been a lifelong neighbor.Grew up with his 5 kids but was never tight with them.He lost his wife of 55+years a few weeks ago.My wife and I have been trying to ease his pain with short visits and a little fresh cooked food as neighbors.We also try to keep his mind active by leading him into stories about the old days.Old Dog said:

Here is a picture of where a trail dumped me.
It took a long time to figure out where the signs led from here.
the red ridge in the background is where I figured the next major pointer would be.
The first photo is where the trail stopped and the second photo is where I finally got it back.
I have yet to figure where the Spanish made the drop into this canyon as the trail does pick up in the bottom.
The sliver is the trail marker that get me past the red ridge and beyond. the final picture is looking back at the first photo from the point of the red ridge .
Here is a picture of where a trail dumped me.

As you and Mike are aware I found no signs beyond the place where the signs disappear into the canyon.
I still find it perplexing as to how they got down into (or up out) of the canyon at that point. But I did progressively search the odd three mile stretch of canyon rim to this peninsula of a red ridge to see if they would have gone down (or come up) along the way.
I did find that the trail is visible from the point of the ridge and proceeds along the canyon floor on up the canyon. I can see it as it progresses around the end of the ridge and out of sight...
I can only wonder why. it would have been so much easier to traverse the tops of the canyon as we do now.

I think a big factor back then was safety , thats why they hung low

This would be my guess also
Man those Pine trees are pretty. Gotta get some for my back yard. That's the one thing I miss more than anything here in Central AZ, it's the Pine trees. Going up to Payson Wednesday to get my fill of them

Same here,
Stay in the canyon, because when you travel along the ridgeline, you are very easily seen from a long way away by your silouhette. Easy pickins.
