OK. But Doc. Fun is fun. enough already! You don't really believe that this brass object, without barbs, was really for catching squirrels, and came with instructions to rub on peanut oil!!!! ::) You are either not an outdoorsman or have been drinking to much MD20-20. Sorry, Jack Daniels.
My god! If you have one of these lures with instructions it would be worth a fortune! It would also answer everyone's questions.
I have to admit, thats funny. ;D But the squirrel jokes are getting old and we still need to ID.

Re: brass acorn

No. But a guy from the church went to the trouble to login and tell us what it is, so I believe its for incense.

Re: brass acorn

I have not investigated. Maybe you are right, :-\ not enough air holes. But I remember the last time I was in church, about a ...er...uh...30 years ago, give or take a decade, and the priest was walking down the center aisle and shaking a smoking acorn, or round shaped brass thingy on a chain, reciting some unintelligible Latin verses. I remember.

I can't believe you found that photo! Jack was always a ladies man but a bit of an an ass. Out of control like a shot, if you know what I mean.
Doc

Is he the one up top, or on the bottom?

;D ;D ;D

Re: brass acorn

Mybe it is some kind of plug? You tie a string to it and fish the string into a hole from outside a boat or vessel, pull it through the hole in the boat hook the rest of the chain to it and some how pull the nails into the wood from the inside, sealing the hole?

Definitely looks like nails that are to be driven into something by pulling the chain...

Edited:
I change my guess, it doesn't make too much sense as a plug. The chain would be too big and it would be a pain to fish it from outside...

I think it may be a weapon... Like a Manrikigusari, and the spikes come out when swung or if your enemy grabs the chain and it slips through his grip and get to the end... Or some kind of flail?

It doesn't work. You need oxygen to keep it lit. There's not enough air flow. Then there is the problem of lighting it and getting it in there. And if this was the function, why spring loaded?
No, don't think this is the answer.
Doc
Who said it's spring loaded?

Re: brass acorn

Re: brass acorn

if pulling on it the way it looks in the picture as if it has tension and when let go of it retracts....just what it looks like...

Re: brass acorn

diggum could this be some kind of a trinket(manly) from a keychain say early -mid 1900's....it somehow just doesnt sing old era to me... for a weapon it just doesn't have the azz to do anything...pulling a chain that size would not do much and it would only prick
