Looks Like a Providence Rhode Island newspaper? from the article sounds like 1888.
As far as he Gardiner Island story, to me sounds laughable.
Who knows? What the real story was. You may be right the whole story may be fabricated. or just conjecture by some random observer.I find the Gardiner Island treasure to make a great deal of sense. It is well documented.
It is far more believable yarns about Capt. Kidd using a treasure map to attempt to gain his freedom.

Interesting, Just never studied it that close, a lot of stuff isn't in the history books. You kind of have to dig around and put it together yourself. Regarding Pirateers in general, there is a wealth of information regarding pirates during thei heyday. There are many wrecks close to shore from their ships. If interested, the book "Black sails blue water"
They were actually treated As dignitaries and welcomed to towns as they brought gods from around the world that the locals were unable to source otherwise.
