Got out on Christmas Eve and the Cane Field Bandits dug three silvers. I got a 1785 half real first in the morning. Took a little on site lunch then dug a 1837 Mexican Republic TWO Reales in absolute great shape! Seems it is a fairly rare coin: Stack's Bowers Galleries - Lot #8303 - MEXICO. Potosi. 2 Reales, 1837-PiJS.
This is about all that I can find about this coin. Another Tnet member did supply me with this informatiuon: "Hello Shane, and Merry Christmas !

Your coin is a 2R from Guanajuato, Mexico, one of 14 Mexican mints to use this design during the Republic period.
On your coin, the mint mark for Guanajuato is "G" with a small "o" within the G.
The assayer(s) were the initials PJ who were on this variety, intermittently, from 1834 to 1842. That mint was opened in 1825 and closed in 1900. Your coin should have a diameter of 27mm.
All the best--and thanks for the question; any time.
Don......"

Then not long after I dug this one buckleboy pulled a 1802 half real out. What Christmas gifts!!!

Two old silvers on same hunt, congrats! Your 1837 Mexican Republic 2 reale is in wonderful shape! As to the mint, Guanajuato was a major colonial Spanish gold & silver mining city. And one of three neighboring colonial cities that was germane to the start of the Mexican Revolution, the other two towns being Delores Hildago and San Miguel de Allende. The human history of the workers and padres of these towns joining together to risk (and lose) their lives to free themselves from oppressive aristocratic Spanish rule is fascinating to read. I visited these cities for a month five years ago. Guanajuato's cathedral's soaring nave walls are literally covered with awesome golden designs! We also toured a gold mine, where they've left exposed a big hunk of wall rock showing the gold vein's streaks. Also visited the regional mining museum's display of minerals. Very cool that you have this special coin! HH Andi

Well it seems I jumped the gun. This particular 2 reales is not so "super rare" after all......the mint mark made all the difference but I must say, it's super rare to me :) And three silver coins in one day!! Wow! Not to mention these made our count EIGHTEEN for the year:) Super excited for sure. Cheers, Shane

Regardless of the rarity you made some great finds there.

Congrats on those Beautiful coins! The excitement was great in the video after you found the 2 Reales :icon_thumright: Way to go and keep it up!

That right there is one coin I am dying to dig!!!WTG!!!

Man, I gotta say BIG Coin-gratulations on that find! Dream find for many. It has age, condition, and large denomination. You just don't see those coins dug often. Killer find, and now we'll try to hit 20 for the year. Let's hit it tomorrow.
