Although i am not an expert in Civil War canteens...

I am gonna say this is not from the Civil War... IMO of course.

I base this opinion on / due to... the style / type of chain used.

The type of chain on yours was not invented until much later... IF i am not mistaken.

Nice find. Usually they are not found complete like that. Here is one I found in Culpeper, VA along with some other relics.

After I posted it, I looked at some and you are right, I did not see any with chains flat like that.
