Hey everyone, well, today really sucked! So I'm out doing my normal dumping and picking up and I left my last dump bank which is right next to one of my pickup banks, I go into my pickup bank and hand my friendly vault teller my $2000.00 for 4 boxes, she counts it and then runs it through her little counting machine ( which also determines counterfeit bills, I didn't know that), she looks at me and says "did you just get this money before you came here?" I said yes, I just left BofA from dumping coins, she said 2 of these hundreds are fake and I'm sorry but I can't give them back to you, I have to send them to the Secret Service. Ok, so what do I do now I asked her, she said, like a smart ass ( we kid with each other all the time) "well, first you need to give me $200 more for your halves lol and I'll give you some paper work for the bills that you can take back to BofA and show them, hopefully they will work with you, didn't the girl run your money through the machine before she gave it to you? Nope, she just counted it and gave it to me, I didn't think anything of it, so she told me to ALLWAYS have them run it through the counting machine, it checks for counterfeit bills, again, I didn't know that, I thought it was just a counting machine. So she gave me the papers to take to the bank and show them.....

Ok, so I go back to BofA and show the lead teller the papers and explained that I just left there 20 min ago and went across the street to My pickup bank and that when I gave them the money their machine said 2 of the bills were fake, so she starts going into this long drawn out explanation on how all their money comes from the central vault and they check it there and it is impossible it came from them and Blah blah blah, so I stopped her in the middle of it and said listen, they came from here, I just left here with them, your teller didn't run them through her machine, just counted them out infront of me. So she asks if the other bank called the Secret Service to check and see if the numbers came up as counterfeit, I said no, she gave me this paperwork and put the same in an envelope with the fake bills to send them to them. So the lady says she is going to call them real qwik and verify the bill numbers to see if they come up, 20 min later she comes back and says that they are not on the counterfeit bill list and that there is really nothing they could do about it since I allready left them bank with them:icon_scratch:, WHAT! I said listen, if you are telling me that I am out $200.00 because you gave them to me and I didn't catch them before I left your bank, you are OUT OF YOUR MIND LADY! You can't honestly have expected me to just accept that and walk out of here, right? I am not accepting that, so she said, Well, you'll just have to talk to my manger then, ok, bring her over here then, because this is about to get ugly. So the manger came over ( I see and talk to her everyweek when I dump there and pay my mortage), so the lead teller explains everything to her and at the end of it, I say to her you can't expect me to just loose $200.00 right? Because this lady just told me that if they come back counterfiet I'm out the money, which now is making me $200.00 short to pay my mortage with you guys. In the end she asked if I would wait to see what the Secret Service says, if they are good they will send them back to my pickup bank, if they are bad, then we will make the situation right for you Mr so and so. Now I left out the whole argument that the teller who gave me the money came over and started with me and the manger while we were talking, but, she decided to come over and say how it was imposible and she would have caught the bill and how they feel different and if they called and the #'s weren't on the list they're not fake and blah blah blah, I told her that the other bank showed me all that and that the other bank said that if she had just run the money through the counter all of this could have been avoided.

Moral of the story guys, ALLWAYS HAVE THEM RUN YOUR MONEY THROUGH THE BILL COUNTER before you leave with it, right now I;m out $200.00 in CRHing money and have to wait weeks now to only start another fight again with them if the bills do in fact come back as fakes:BangHead:. Hope this advice helps out some of you! HH, Maverick.

I had a similar thing happen to me but it was only a $20. It came out of the bank's atm. If failed the pen test at one of my pickup banks but they traded it back to me for another $20. Went back to the original bank and they had to confiscate the bill and fill out some paperwork on it. Was supposed to claim something on that years tax return but forgot to.
Hope it all works out for you Maverick. One of the hazards of our hobby i guess.

I have actually thought about this before.....can you ask the teller to check them with that pen thingy you see at retail stores? The thingy they mark your paper money with to see if it is legit? Do banks have those?
You can pick up those pens at Office MAX , Office Depot , Ect , If I recall they were like 3 for $9.99 , Good Investment ,

the bank should give you a formal apology and fire the teller who accepted a phony bill, and give you an extra $1000 for your heart ache. if you ask me, if you have proof when you got the money, this can easily be a legal case, I suggest you consult with lawyers in your area and look into suing the bank.

Tough Mav, tough. Thanks for sharing this with us. I know I don't think twice about this kinda thing happening. Maybe now I'll have them run it through the counter. Good luck with getting them bills back!

Sorry for the situation and thanks for the heads up, Mav. My only encounter with fake $100 was that one time my teller friend told me that she found a fake one and I asked her to show me. Now I will pay a little more attention for the bills handed to me.

If the bills have the plastic strip embedded, the watermark, and the color shifting ink, then they were indeed very good fakes. The most believable fake $20 I have seen was a $5 bleached out with a $20 printed on it. It had that almost-right feel too it, but was missing everything else.

I found a $100 that was counterfeit when balancing my works atm. It felt right but looked faded more than normal. When check security features it turned out to be a $5 that was washed and reprinted. Counterfeit detector pens don't catch this type of fraud...neither does the "feel" test. Just have to be careful with these things.

I have bought these from Amazon and they work great. Not a bad idea for people who handle a lot of $100 bills.

I don't think so. He left the property and was gone for twenty minutes while at the other bank. To much time has elapsed for a lawsuit and I doubt you will find a lawyer to take the case.
As far as making it right, BofA should have already done that but I can see that if the bills came back ok then they would be out that $200.00 as they have no horse in that race and cannot
claim that money.

Yup, I will have to call my friend at the other bank today to see what happens after they determine if they are fake or not, I'm not sure if they will send her or me something stating this or if they will send her or me the bills back if they determine they are not counterfeit, I am unclear on that aspect of it. The manger at BofA said she would make it right if they were deemed to be fake, I just don't know what I will have to bring her to prove that in the end. HH, Maverick.

it could be any bank but, everyone needs to be extra careful with BOA someone bombed them with counterfeit 100$ bills. They are having a huge problem with this for the past couple months. HH
Yeah, inside job if you want my opinion.

Sorry to hear mav, I heard somewhere that people take lower bills like $5 bills, bleach them and print over them with higher bills because they will feel real, look real, and even have the water marks... but I bet if those fakes were held up to the light, there will be a $5 watermark.
I hope you get your money back.

Hey Buff, thanks, she said they were really good fakes, when she held them up to the light she showed me the image and marks it's supposed to have ( even the little blue and red threads) I would never have guessed they were fake, just really sucks because a $200.00 hit to my CRHing fund is not cool, thank god I had dumped enough that morning that I had an extra grand on me to cover the $200.00 she took from me. HH, Maverick.

Dang....Sorry to hear about this. As soon as I read this I went to the bank next door to get information on how to spot fake 100's. I am going to be selling my 68 Barracuda this Saturday afternoon for $10K and the guy says he is bringing cash. He has been real excited about this car for over a week and calling at least once a day about it. This story really got my attention. The website NewMoney.gov gives great information on spotting fake money. Hope this will help everyone in the future.

HH...Gerry

I just printed off some information on checking for fake bills and it says if you turn them over to the police and they turn out to be fake, you will "NO" be reimbursed.

That is a correct statement but these bills came from a Bank!!!!
I would certainly hope they checked all of their "C" notes after Maverick brought it to their attention.

You would think so. But then again...They are the bank.

Those pens won't always work unfortunately. sometimes yes but if it is a legitimate note that was washed and re printed (I.E. a five bleached and turned into a 50). Those pens only work on fake currency printed on different types of paper.

The best way to detect fakes is knowing what to look for...feel, color, size, security strips, red and blue fibers in the paper, micro printing, etc. I've seen some good ones in my day that will fool the currency counters every time...

Sorry to hear this happened to ya Mav! I know its tough because one would think your money is legit coming straight from the bank!

Let us know if it gets resolved!!

I know right? You'd think you wouldn't have to worry about it coming from the bank! I also just hate the akwardness this will most likely cause now at one of my dump banks, uuhhgg. I know that teller just hates my guts now and it will be weird now going to her to exchange, I know some would say they would dump all over her but, I just rather do this hobby without all the hatefulness .
