I have finally found a decent place to hunt. After using multiple maps i have found a few sites, 2 of which were old schools in the late 1890's early 1900's. both spots are vacant at this time. problem it is slightly ghetto now. kinda thinking about walking around with a 1000 detector maybe should bring some protection? Anyone have any ideas of what to do? maybe go early?

take a buddy or at the very least call and let people know where you are when you expect to be back home and that you'll check in so they know to contact the authorities if you don't check in. personally, i'd carry at least a .45 if I were "in da ghetto" but where I go a 9mm would suffice because I don't plan on having to make the bullets count. i'd look into a concealed carry license and get a handgun registered for it. a springfield arms XS series handgun is perfect for concealed carrying.

He's in NJ so the posibility to get a permit is slim to none. NJ is VERY gun unfriendly.

if your in a unfriendly gun state like jersey then i'd carry a nice machete as a diggin tool

Its funny.....I read alot of comments on here with the same thing being said..white guy + metal detector = such and such. Well friends, and I say that sincerely, I am here to tell you it goes both ways. Here I am, a Black guy with a metal detector in a predominately white town...in Texas no less! I am in Abilene...stationed at Dyess AFB. Other places I have been stationed, I have had no problems knocking on someones door to ask permisson. But Abilene??? Not a chance...as soon as they see me approach I can hear hammers cocking back and rounds being chambered. In no way am I pulling a race card here...I grew up in a military household and have lived with many different races, but in this place, I wont go out unless I am armed. I attained my CHL just before my last deployment. So I guess..have Taurus, will detect.

Strap a 12 gauge to your detector with duct tape, that should keep them at a distance.

Doc,

You got a lot of advice here. I'm not 6'2", hell I'm not even 6'. After 30 years in Law Enforcement here is my 2 cents:

1. If you find yourself somewhere and say. "Man, I wouldn't want to be here alone at night". You need to leave.
2. "Crack addicts don't sleep"
3. Even if you carry a gun. You must be willing to take a life. Not for your treasure or detector but for your life.
4. I think I would scope it out a little more and just walk around a little and see what kind of feeling/signals I got.
5. I'm a novice when it comes to MD'ing so a lot of my poor decisions to hunt an area may have been poor decisions. I would think though that a building torn down 20 years ago would have a lot of trash. Too much to sift through on 1, 2 or 3 hunts. You'd have to spend a lot of time there.

Again just my 2 cents and again I ain't no expert.

It's funny how some of you say that it's not worth the risk to find a few pennies. How would you know what can be found if you have never detected in those areas?
I live in the murder capitol of Canada and spent most of my coin hunting days in the ghetto. These areas are some of the oldest in the city and are barely detected because most hunters are too scared. Worked for me! Never mind old coins, try hunting in the rich white-washed neighborhoods. You'd be lucky to find a penny. The "rougher" areas are loaded!
One of the best parks I've hunted was in the roughest part of town and that place was ripe with old coins! I'd detect for hours and when it got dark and the street lights came on, I'd even hunt till one in the morning by myself!
You guys are scared and live in a country where your allowed to carry protection. I'm not even allowed to carry a knife longer than 6 inches unless I'm wearing a turban! (Seeks are allowed to wear ceremonial daggers) :icon_scratch:
I'm not trying to be an A-hole and don't think any less of you. I completely understand the dynamics of the world today. Fear is how the masses are controlled and stay in line. That's why the media constantly spews fear. It helps corrupt governments, religions, and corporations to maintain their power over the people.
As for the ghetto, it is fear of the unknown. I've spent many a day there and have never been attacked or even threatened. In fact, I made some friends. All I ever had to carry for protection was common sense.
The only attacks I ever heard of on detectorist's were them getting jumped from a group of white kids who were bored to death from growing up in a rich suburb. ::)
Humans and animals will attack if they sense fear. It's the law of nature.
But you are right. If you're full of fear, then stay away from those neighborhoods! I don't mind. More to be found! :headbang:
Cheers,
Dave.

P.S. I don't have a problem with any of you but fear, yes I do. It has no place in my world and never caused anything but stress. NO FEAR!

You must be talking about Trenton or Newark ??? Personally, I wouldn't go but your entitled to do what you want. No coin is worth my life or getting "Jacked"

So you hunt alone and weaponless at one AM in the roughest part of town with your only protection being……………..common sense?

I've done that before about a dozen times. I'm under 40, still have long hair and carry a positive vibe with me. Is that enough? ;D

I wear grubby clothes and I'm digging in the mud for coins. Is that some a big $$$ BAIT $$$ for all the bad people? My old beat up 1266X? I don't even carry my wallet half the time and when I do, there's no money in it. My 1996 Suzuki Swift has very little value.
They probably see me no different than a pan-handler, squeegee kid, or dumpster diver looking for ten cent cans. Do you think their going to kill me just for fun?
Really people, what's to be afraid of?
Hey, I'm not saying everyone run out to the ghetto and say "look at me, I'm not scared of you" :tongue3:
Common sense is the best thing to carry at all times. If it doesn't feel right, no sense pushing it.
Overall, I have missed out on opportunities because of fear. Haven't we all?

Unfortunately, yes. :-\

Perhaps that's how it is in those 'rough Canadian ghettos', but here in Chicago, it's mostly fear of heavily armed, predatory and intensely territorial gangs, wilding thugs and general ghetto insularity that doesn't bode well for interloping honkeys.

The reason people avoid those places isn't because they're 'unknown'. Quite to the contrary, they avoid them because they are so well known and notorious as being places you want no part of.

Sincerely:

A guy who lives within long-walking distance from here

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I left chicago's southside in 1998 after living there since 1959, prior to me leaving they (THE GANGS) killed my son in law ON THE 4TH OF JULY OF 1998 AMD ONE WEEK LATER KILLED MY UNCLE OVER HIS SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK FUNDS AS HE LEFT THE CURRENCY EXCHANGE HE WAS 73 YRS OLD... I had 4 children at the time all very young 11, 10, 5, and 1 yrs old... i did not want to bury any of them so i got the hell out of dodge city... i live 280 miles south of chicago now and could not be any happier... there is no preference to killing anyone anymore in chicago, its a risk you take each and everyday you walk out your door... not to say you can not get killed inside your house, because thats always a possibility as well, when you live in gang ridden areas.... HH Joe Hoo?

If your state has concealed carry, then by all means carry. I like to have a semi auto CO2 BB gun with me as it is not nearly as lethal and hurts like heck when you get hit with it. Makes for a nice big bruise even through a heavy coat.

Police are worthless when it comes to self protection. It is up to you to protect yourself. Just make sure you are legal.

not sure i'd wanna rely on a CO2 bb gun to protect myself

A suggestion: If you want to avoid confrontations in rundown neighborhoods you need to blend in. I'd recommend: baggy pants worn between knee and thigh level with white boxers fully exposed and imprinted liberally with red hearts (hearts are optional) and an Obama "Yes We Can" T-shirt. Remember to curse and strut as you walk, occasionally grabbing your crotch.

You should be concealed better than a polar bear in a snowstorm. Be careful though, the entire image can be blown should you speak a full sentence out loud with both verb and subject in agreement. Or worse, you slip-up by using words with two or more syllables.
It is a risk, but Good Luck.

I'm with ya Joe. The only reason we're here is because my fiancees mother- who occasionally needs help with daily stuff- is approaching her retirement and isn't eligible for city pension for another year. After that, adios Southside and most likely, adios Chicago all together. This city will become Detroit inside of 50 years.

It's really a disgrace to see the blue collar white communities of the Southside go this way, but it is what it is. Anyone who ever questions the "why" of white flight can be safely categorized as someone who has never had to actually live in a deteriorating area. This isn't to advance any racist cause- there are good and bad in all races- but certain unfortunate truisms exist despite ideologies on race; anyone who has ever endured a down-turning neighborhood understands this in a way that the idealists will never begin to comprehend. This even applies to the working class and formerly stable black neighborhoods like Chatham that are now being overrun by shithead gangs... When they tore down the high rise projects and spread that manure over the city via Section 8 and CHA subsidy, it was the death knell for the safety and stability of certain communities.

Sorry to hear about your son in law and uncle. I hope we are able to get her mother situated somewhere the hell out of here before one of us meets a similar fate >:(

On the Detroit river
I would love to hunt this park. It has some woods even some deer, but also some unsafe places to be. I would not hunt there if I didn,t have a CCW It has some great history.

That park is off-limits to hunting, but if you check in at the little white house on the Island, and let them know where you'll be on there, they may let ya hunt. As far as anyone bothering you, just a few bums wanting coffee money :laughing7:. Roger Penske has turned most of the island into concrete & stone paddocks. I and my friends have been hunting that park for over 50 years. And this year it will see its first Etrac. You can safely go there with 1 or 2 others, no need to pack (unless you in the woods) HH..........NGE

and you will be so much better for it when you get that chance to get the hell out.. i watched my neighborhood go from hardworking polish, bohemians, germans, to all mexican and black in a matter of a couple of years... i am sure you are witnessing the same scenario... i am no racist by any means but these people do not make good neighbors.... Ever get shot by one? I have.....it is not pleasant. I had to dig out the BB and it was in about a half inch.
BB guns can kill. Or.....as the kid in the movie knows.....you might shoot yourself in the eye!

I used a BB gun to stop a car thief at my dad's business in East Cleveland. That guy went down after being hit in the leg and he did not get up. He was in real pain. Called the police and he was arrested.

So don't sell BB guns short....especially today's modern BB guns.

One of the towns neighboring me is pretty rough. I actually love the town, but I've been hesitant to MD there. I've spoken to a bunch of other detectorists in my area and seems everyone avoids the place like the plague (great for me!). Tonight we drove by some old fairgrounds and I go to thinking. Like someone mentioned earlier, dress as though you work for the town and make it looks a professional as possible. Bring some buddies and have them do the same. Oh yeah, bring a gun.
