Detector(s) used
Minelab E-Trac
I have finally found a decent place to hunt. After using multiple maps i have found a few sites, 2 of which were old schools in the late 1890's early 1900's. both spots are vacant at this time. problem it is slightly ghetto now. kinda thinking about walking around with a 1000 detector maybe should bring some protection? Anyone have any ideas of what to do? maybe go early?

Ever get shot by one? I have.....it is not pleasant. I had to dig out the BB and it was in about a half inch.
BB guns can kill. Or.....as the kid in the movie knows.....you might shoot yourself in the eye!

I used a BB gun to stop a car thief at my dad's business in East Cleveland. That guy went down after being hit in the leg and he did not get up. He was in real pain. Called the police and he was arrested.

So don't sell BB guns short....especially today's modern BB guns.

I've been shot by them- yes, it stings. I actually kinda enjoy modern airguns just for fun. I have a couple of those little Walther PPK blowback BB guns that are a riot to shoot and I couldn't resist the allure of a Drozd. THAT thing is an ornery cuss ;D

Still, BB guns are totally worthless against a determined attacker. They have zero stopping power and stopping power is how you measure a defensive weapon. You need it to physically disable someone, regardless of how determined they are to keep attacking. Rue the day you actually had to use a BB gun to stop a 220# attacker high on meth or PCP. You'd better be able to hit an eyeball with it and even then, he still may keep coming.

OC spray, a taser, a firearm. Those are your best bets. Anything else is banking on the attacker being easily persuaded, which isn't something I'm willing to bet my life on.

The big unanswered question here is :DID Dr Jones FIND ANYTHING AT THE SCHOOL SITE???

I've seen Dr. Jone's posts on another forum and sent him a pm telling him about how this thread was still active and that people wanted to know if he ever went on his ghetto hunt. No reply. If he did hunt that school then at least he survived it!

Sorry even with friend you take a chance of being robbed or even killed. Cuz a crack or methhead doesn't care who sees them do it they always have a aliby for the crime unless they get busted in the process. To me it would not be worth your life unless one of your buddy detectors is a cop. find other areas.

Where im at right now, I would just Bust the person as hard as can in the nose if I can get it out.
And make sure my work was dune as I was leaveing.

its a shame that there are parks like that. here in my neck of the woods the most i have to fear is coyotes i guess every place is unique in my opinion there would have to be something pretty good for me to go into one of those places,i detect to have fun first and find stuff second ask yourself how much fun would you have there im betting not much
good luck have fun and be safe

If most of the politicians in your state were not so corrupt you could have a legal CWP and carry unlike the gangbangers who don't care and carry anyway

Does "BB gun" mean "Big Bullet gun"?

deepskyal is right, you might dig up a hypodermic needle and stick yourself while pulling out the dirt from the hole. Is that spot really worth all the trouble you could bring yourself.

This seems to be an on going post, so I will put my 2 Indian heads into the conversation. Everyone assumes that the "ghetto" is black, but why not change the situation around and think about a "redneck" ghetto in the south, or anywhere else for that matter. Now comes along a black guy with his metal detector. Do you really think that he would get a huge welcome from the neighborhood, even if he gives them "respect"? I doubt that the rednecks there would really care if the police came or not, they would run this guy out, maybe not kill him, but someone might just step on his detector or his tires just might go flat. So why would the situation be any different in a "black ghetto"? All ghetto people protect their territory, and they don't really worry about the police coming or not.

Sure, we all go at one time or another, into situations where the hair on our necks stands up straight, and part of that is just natural if you are in a new area, but this natural feeling is what keeps us alive. If a bit iffy, go with a friend, but if more than a bit iffy, just go somewhere else.

what post said "Black Ghetto"? I don't recall any color being mentioned...??

edit... I see that you assume that people are thinking this. Come on man, it's 2011

Your right! I assumed it was black, since thats the term that is usually used to identify run down black or even hispanic areas, not white areas. Yes, its 2011, but what does that have to do with it? There are still areas where outsiders are not welcome, what ever colour they are, and that was the whole point I was trying to make.

A lot of good advice here.

Being "a little ghetto" is like being "a little pregnant".

Having lived in a few "ghetto" areas in my life (not little, either - Bedford-Styvesant in Brooklyn, NY and Newark, New Jersey), I would say that
if you have the slightest "feeling" that there might be a problem - either go in a group - or don't go.

$1000 detector doesn't measure up to your safety. Some people will kill you for 2 bucks. Go with your gut feelings - and you already know what they are, since you asked the question.

yah, thats what im going with. Im just gonna go early and do it. maybe from 6-8. a couple days in a row. Ill just make sure i have back up. Its too tempting of a sight to give up. Hopefully, it wont be a problem. Ill post pics of any finds, if there are any.

thanks everyone
So did you ever go?

I used to live in Los Angeles and I detected parks in the ghetto all the time without a problem. I liked detecting in those areas because I didn't have any other detectorists to deal with and when someone did talk to me they never tried to start nothing because I detected there for so long that almost everyone knew me. I remember one day I was detecting in a park in South Central and a LAPD car pulled up and started honking and I walked over to see what he wanted and he looked at me like I was crazy and he said Are you lost, do you know where you're at? I said no I'm not lost I know exactly where I'm at. He said boy you're either really brave or really dumb walking around this neighborhood cause I won't even get out of my car around here. I just laughed and walked away and he left. Right after the cop left some of the guys that were sitting in the park walked over and asked me what the cop said and I told them and they laughed .
