I have finally found a decent place to hunt. After using multiple maps i have found a few sites, 2 of which were old schools in the late 1890's early 1900's. both spots are vacant at this time. problem it is slightly ghetto now. kinda thinking about walking around with a 1000 detector maybe should bring some protection? Anyone have any ideas of what to do? maybe go early?

I live in Baltimore MD. That may not be South Chicago, but we've competed with Detroit for "Murder Capital".

There's been a number of thinly veiled racist sentiments expressed in this thread. I work with quite a few black doctors, nurses and administrative types. All of these fine people are more at risk than I am, because I am white.

No, there has been absolutely no 'racism' in this thread, veiled or open.
There has, however, been a pretty realistic discussion on an issue that has a direct connection to race, which causes some 'idealist' types to howl racist since racism and reality are often synonymous to such people.

I've never lived in Baltimore, but I do know the city a little bit- lived in Perry Point for a while and used to MARC down pretty regularly. I didn't see anything about Baltimore that would suggest its any different than South Chicago.

This whole idea that you as a white guy are likely to experience less trouble in a dangerous black area because you're white is one of those things that people tell themselves to feel better. Citing black on black crime statistics is a huge logical contortion, but I won't get into that, since this is an easy-going metal detecting forum.

.45 works for me-any race

This works for me :headbang:

In the Air Force we take a yearly class in ORM. Operational Risk Management. Basically even getting out of bed in the morning is risky, hell you could be hit by a truck. With ORM you acknowledge the risks and determine whether it is worth it. Now you have to ask yourself one question: do the possible gains outweigh the risks? I mean how risky is this anyway? How big are the possible gains?

I had to change my hunting spot today cause I knew I'd be alone, too many murders here, freakin young stupid punks, really really pisses me off. Every damn day its another. Kind of makes me sick of living in the New Orleans area.

Leave your car running with the door open..... they won't bother you....

Oh! But haven't you heard?
You're just as safe in those places as you would be anyplace else! Even MORE so if you're white!

:icon_scratch:

Seriously, I wish I could round up all the people who advance these delusionally idealistic positions like this and take them and their happythoughts to Grand Crossing and force them to live there for one year. They would leave with a very, very different opinion on the world, if they survived.

Is there anywhere around Chicaoland that you hunt, LS?

Like I said, there's a lot of us onboard who you could hunt with in a lot of places in the area, if you're so inclined.

I think the weather is more of a problem these days though.

I eagerly hunt "blighted spots" those rough inner city crackhead / homeless drunk and plain ole homeless haunts ( I am 6 foot 2 and 450 lbs ) --often they are virgin or near virgin sites -- since most "normal" folks are too "scared" to hunt them * -- #1 I do stay alert -- #2 I do not hunt with head phones on ( no head phones that way I can hear everything is going on about me ) #3 -- I hunt only in the daylight hours #4 if availble I bring a freind (safety in numbers) #5 in no freind is availible --I carry my "special freind " with 6-- 38 cal buddies in him #6 if crack head comes up --i turn and face him looking straight in the eyes -- I CHAT POLITELY AND RESPECTFULLY TO THEM IN A FREINDLY TONE OF VOICE ---HOWEVER I NEVER LET ONE GET BEHIND ME OR TOO CLOSE TO ME EVER -- often from chatting WITH them , I find out tips about other intersting places or they will show me something they "found" to see if i want to buy it ==at times this can be quite useful as far a gathering intell on nearby sites to MD --SOMETIMES THEY FIND SOME VERY INTERESTING "HISTORICAL STUFF " in their daily shuffling about

PS I AM NOT BEING RACIST -- DRUG USERS AND DRUNKS AND HOMELEESS FOLKS --COME IN ALL RACES AND SEXES AS WELL AS AGE RANGES -- MOST ARE NOT "BAD" OR DANGEROUS PEOPLE BUT SOME OF THEM CAN BE --AS I SAY --- NOT EVERY LOIN YOU SEE IN AFRICA WANTS TO ATTACK AND EAT YOU UPON SEEING YOU -- HOWEVER SOME MIGHT -- SO IT PAYS TO BE CAREFUL (AND ARMED JUST "IN CASE")

Snicker! :laughing7:

Sorry ivan, couldn't let you get away with a typo like that! At 6'2" & 450 you are probably a lot safer than I am at 5'7" & 160. I pretty much stay away from those areas. I once did an internship in a psychiatric emergency room at a hospital in the hood. I saw first hand what the police were bringing in off the streets. A lot of these people were "frequent flyers"; they were bi-polar, schizophrenic, and all kinds of other fun stuff. As soon as they were released they would sell their psych meds and use whatever money they could get together to buy drugs and alcohol. They would go on a binge that lasted until the drugs were gone. By that time they were violent, whacked-out crazy and going through withdrawal. I saw people who had attacked strangers, stabbed their mother, and set fire to themselves. These are not individuals that I would want to share a ghetto park or a vacant lot with. I respect the decision of others to hunt those areas and I hope they are aware of the danger. I also envy them for the finds they sometimes make in those places............just not enough to want to hunt where they hunt.

Thank God for the Detroit Loins! From a Bears fan....

And right on Ivan, been there done that. Had my worst times in the "safest" places and some great finds in the "nasty" places.

Not really. I'm a Floridian by blood, hanging out up here to exercise a few opportunities. My main interest is in the shipwreck thing and historic artifacts. Could probably be persuaded to go detect a Civil War site or the like, but the idea of wandering around some park all day digging up garbage in the hopes of finding a quarter really isn't my bag.

Just openly carry, they will think twice about anything with a large barrel on your hip

This post is old...did you ever go and hunt your spot?

Uh-Oh, he hasn't posted since September 20th! You don't suppose...........? :angel11:

The main reason i want to go is because the school was knocked down about 20 years ago, but was built in the late 1890's. its on the corner of a main area. I have never seen anyone detecting it, ever. I live about 15 min away out of the --deleted--hole area, but i guess it could be picked clean. Ill bring my buddies sig and sauer. their always up for fun. Just sux, i think it may be a good spot for some old coins but ill weigh the risks. damn ghettos
Dr.Jones I regularly hunt in the getto areas in and around Columbus Ohio, and have never been bothered other than asked a few questions to see what i was doing and such,But if you can have a hunt pard to go with you all the better...most of my hunts are early in the morning while the crack heads are sleeping off the night before,i quit around 11:00 Am when they start to stir...go try the spot early in the morning to see if it is worth spending time there...A lot of time when they tear down old schools they haul away the good stuff in the top soil, but is still worth looking into, tect out from the the school sites around the big trees and any grassy knolls, should be better for you there, hope this helps, just be aware of what is around you,and have fun, take care,Dave

Wow...Theres alot of intresting comments in here...Its funny because i actually prefer going to the Ghetto to detect..Ive never had any issues besides the poilce telling me that i need to becareful..I usally go with a buddy who brings his .45...But even when i go alone..i walk around with a pickaxe in one hand...The bums dont ever talk to me...the neighborhood kids never talk to me..i usally make my self look very unapproachable..I see where some people say "Is it worth it for a Silver coin"...well for me....(Someone who hasnt been detecting for 30 plus years)..YES!..

There have been times were i felt a little uncomforatble..and i let...but i spend more time watching my surroundings..then i do the ground....BUT..i have had way better luck at the run down house oppose to the parks that have been hunted for years

I go to some sketchy places but I have a Conceal Firearms permit and usually carry when I am in these places. Granted it wont help if theyre packing too and if there are a couple of them. But I wont go down without a fight!!
