Detecting with a dog. Discuss.

Yes Hillbilly Joe my dog has chewed through 2 nylon leashes, I know the feeling lol. I have a steel plastic coated leash now. AusTexDude I always wondered if a dog could be a treasure sniffer myself, they have nose way more sensitive then ours. I saw a dog on TV that could sniff out Truffles which are quite expensive. On the TV show Hillbilly Blood a Blood Hound was sniffing out Ginseng Root, but that is a reality show, so who knows on that. Dogs will work for yummy treats.

I had a couple of walkers. They were the coon hound variety. There is also the fox hound variety. They live to hunt. They can track all night. When they tree the coon, they will bark at the base of the tree untill there bark is gone. They will never change. It is bread into them. I had a beagle that would track rabbits all day if let loose. It all in the breeding.
They usually use pigs to find Truffles, but dogs can do it also. Dogs can be trained to track and find any living thing or a chemical that emits a sent. Metal does not emit a sent. Frank... 111-1 profile.webp

This is a subject that I wish wouldn't come up. Many a find have been found in the city park under a dog dropping. They smell it in the ground and poop right there I guess. But I don't always hunt city parks. The dogs pick up on the animal trails pretty quick. But they also pick up on the old foot trails and mule trails. These trails are much preferred than the slow gradual trial and error of some trails I have been on.

It is settled. I'm on my way to pick up a 9 week old Nova Scotia Dog Toller. I will post a picture of "Rosie" soon.

She will be my partner in crime. I have a feeling she'll want to do more beaches than farms. :)

Silver and aluminum do put out a scent and from my research dogs HAVE been trained to detect metals..

It's not DNA... how do bomb dogs sniff out bombs? How do money dogs sniff out money?

Dogs can be pretty much trained to track ANY smell, not just a human.

Basically, with human tracking it is DNA. You are constantly shedding it. As I stated in my post, They can locate chemical odors. I would imagine the ink in the money gives off an odor. Think about it! Frank...
Blue 1212.webpBlue can find a mole in the ground thru 12" of snow.

To me its a lot of work swinging and digging with one of my dog, lil' puppy man, if i had him off leash on the river banks, he would be off chasing ducks, geese and seagulls. Same goes if I am in the woods, he is a noted squirrel killer, he bagged two this year, I told him "If you kill it, you gotta eat it" so he had squirrel dinner for a few nights. So a long story short, he doesn't go MD'ing with nor hunting 'shrooms.

but he love's fishing with daddy!

I've been a professional dog trainer for many years. Never heard of dog that could detect buried metals. I'm going to have to look into that one a little more. The school I went to taught us to train narcotics sniffing dogs to trailing and tracking dogs plus search and rescue dogs. I am mostly a retriever trainer and train bird dogs.

I wanted to comment on the snake thing after reading this post. I personally would never give my dogs the rattle snake shot. But that's just me. I know people that have given them to their dogs and they still suffered the same effects from a bite. Most dogs will survive a rattler bite if you give them benedryl soon enough and get them to the vet. But the best way to avoid your pet being bitten is by training them to avoid snakes at all costs. You can look for local retriever clubs in your area and they can probably point you to a snake breaking clinic in your area. We have 3 or 4 a year in Montana. If anyone has questions on any training issues, just pm me.

Absolutely. I have a lab that I use for shed antler hunting. Like was said earlier... if it decomposes or puts off a scent then a dog would be a good aid in detecting it.

One thing you'll want to do is make sure you either teach them to recall to you or to sit and alert you, so they don't tear them up.

Silver puts off a heavy, very distinctive odor. It's the first thing I do when something silver colored is presented to me I smell it. I remember a thread where some kid found a bunch of silver trophies buried a few inches below the surface. I bet if you were standing close enough you could probably smell them rotting in the ground.

That's one thing he does well, responds to voice commands and hand gestures.

Its bad enough that I haven't been able to metal detect for several months, but you didn't have to remind me that I can't fish for wild trout or hunt shrooms too!
