Diggers

It is EXACTLY attitudes like yours that is why the two groups need to meet in some middle ground. I agree that if you are detecting in someone's yard, or a not historically important site, there is no need for documentation. On the other hand, if you discover an important site, some basic level of documentation should be done. I also agree that all site cannot be saved. I have seen too many important sites destroyed because there was no funding to do "proper" archaeology. BUT I have seen sites that have were going to be destroyed that were saved because local metal detectorists found important artifacts on the sites.

Check the work being done at Montpelier. The archaeologists there have a program to work with metal detectorists and both groups benefit. The problem with these reality shows is that they fail to teach any level of responsibility about historic sites to someone not in the hobby.

Sticks and stones ... I still get to detect much better sites than front yards :-)

My attitude has nothing to do with it, every archeologist that I have talk to think that any and all detecting should only be done at an archeological dig, and only for the cause. I'll stick to my yards, there's may be no historical value to the things that I find, but they are my finds. And as far as the show not being educational on any level, I really think you may be missing something. Is it a documentary? Nope. It's just a couple of cool dudes, digging up some stuff and having fun bringing it to the masses. The archeologists are just mad that they can't be just as awesome as KG and RM.

This thread is a lot more interesting and entertaining than the show will ever be.

my opinion is when an archaeologists is willing to go ask for permission to do a dig,
get up in the morning, head out to the site with what ever tools he needs & start digging
purely for the Love of history.

when he does not ask for financial Backing,
does not put out feelers to get students to do the digging
while he walks around expecting the finders to call him/her over to hand every find
of importance while marking on a map where it was found.

in other words when the Archaeologist is willing to do it on their own
as a hobby as well as a job I would probably feel something for the archaeological community.

Yes they do have an archaeologist on site, BUT THEY NEVER SHOW THEM ON THE AIR. Unfortunately their methods of documentation and artifact analysis have been very poor. Now to answer a few questions that popped up while I was away. Yes I am an Archie, BUT I started as a relic hunter in 1972. Can you say BFO?? I was a charter member of the FMDAC (Federation of Metal Detecting and Archaeology Clubs). Worked closely with Dick Stout on helping to promote this hobby. I am offended by Diggers as a METAL DETECTORIST. They make us all look STUPID - especially their "DICTIONARY". When was the last time you called a site "NECTAR"?? For those of you who don't like the show, I found this online petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/the...tm_medium=email&utm_campaign=petition_created NOTE: I AM NOT INVOLVED WITH THE PETITION. AND SO WHAT IF I AM AN ARCHAEOLOGIST?? I have been working very successfully to bring the two groups together. Even though I cannot keep what I find, I get to metal detect in some VERY COOL sites. So get over it!
Your everything I thought you were...come on here and post a petition against the show, that was your whole agenda from the get go...working to bring the two groups together? do you think were stupid? ...I wasn't mad before, but that changed when you posted that petition...IM OFFENDED BY YOU...you know what you can do with that petition.

Thank you. That is EXACTLY what I do. I do not get paid (unlike the two morons on Diggers), I use my own equipment, I do it on my time because I do have a "real" job. However, I have been accepted by a number of "professional" archaeological societies as an archaeologist. Why do I do this when I cannot keep the artifacts? I would rather find historically important artifacts rather than pocket change. BTW - there are a number of archaeologists have have become hobbyists and have joined metal detecting clubs. Every group (as you can see with this thread) has extremists. The number of archaeologists who think that metal detecting is a bad thing has been shrinking ever since the great work done at the Little Bighorn in 1984.

Another member of team ATC ( Bones ) assisted an archeological dig a couple years ago. He found the best items that day. Do you think he received any credit it the news article? Nope it was all the work of the valiant archeologists preserving our history. The think that upsets me the most about archeologists isn't their love of history, it's the fact that most work on grants that come from the government or a college that probably received the money from the government. Then they have the nerve to battle the detecting community thinking that because they sat in a classroom learning about history they are more entitled to dig for stuff. And yet they don't deny our tax money for their grants. Besides I don't know if any detectorist that goes around disturbing grave sites like those sick people.

Besides, there are way more supporters of those two " morons" then there are people that don't support them, so your efforts to accost the network for the past couple years doesn't seem to be working. So move on. There are other valiant fights out there like fat kids or tree hugging.

Now let's add sour grapes to sticks and stones. You obviously do not know a damn thing about archaeology - OH that's why you support Diggers!! I am in it for fun - don't care if my name ends up in a news article.

Now the horse has been whipped to death, buried, and dug up by a sadistic archaeologist!

This thread is now getting redundant and boring. BYE

I support Diggers because it gives people a window into what we true detectorists love, it shows that were not just a bunch of bums out looking for spare change. Don't let the doorknob hit ya:0)

Your still welcome here .

Your right, many people look at detectorist as weirdos looking for pennies...they have no clue what this hobby is about...the show lets them know we are just normal people enjoying a hobby.

Here's one of your exact quotes from another thread........

"With the new trend to be over sensitive and offended by everything, it can be pretty easy to bait em in."

Maybe you know more about this "New trend" from personal experience?

I think you should practice what you preach!

Anything negative posted about Diggers and there you are..... defending them and the show without fail.

A perfect description of someone who is "over sensitive"

Just sayin'
