They act like they been metal detecting for years and the one show he says its the first large cent he has ever found, I detected for four years and have four large cents now. They are pretty new to it or are really bad at it, I think its both because of some of the places they get to detect and I find more stuff at one old farm house and I've only detected in Indiana.
So, someone doesn't act like you and do it your way and so its wrong...try being open minded...no one is telling you that you are acting and doing things the wrong way...think about that. Its not about hate...it is about perception, and that is the bad word. Since the world nowadays judges everybody they see, acting like a nutcase, will make your typical john q. Public person quick to stereo type and lump all others in the same way. Now that said, I only watched one episode, but the one I watched, was at some old mansion with a manicured lawn, and the guys were making horrible looking craters to pop coins!!. Now say some person sees that show that's never seen a metal detecting hobbyist before and is shocked by the mess of that lawn..how well do you think I would do asking permission to detect their lawn, when all they know is seeing that show that I watched ??..I'll tell you how it will go..buh bye..sorry. No point in explaining, or trying to that I can pop coins at 8 inches using nothing more than a screwdriver and a small slit in the soil. So yeah, to go on TV and try to be stewards to the hobby/lifestyle that I have loved since the mid 70's and act like that, and dig craters like that..they should be ashamed!!! This is just my opinion, but after all these years in the hobby, I feel the right to share it, since I have witnessed first hand what happens with perception of a bad apple digging craters..as in almost everywhere is closed to our hobby now. You think old coins are distributed throughout the US evenly? They act like they been metal detecting for years and the one show he says its the first large cent he has ever found, I detected for four years and have four large cents now. It is pretty obvious that the stuff they find isn't planted...if they planted items they would plant stuff with a lot more value than the finds they make.I know I haven't been here in a while but thought I would chime in. KG and RM are my best friends and have been for many years. I have worked on a few shows with them and can certainly attest contrary to any rumors that the finds are not planted. The boys go to a site and are cut loose, each with a camera man. Not much to it, just two buddies out detecting, and yes that's how they really are in life. Go to the ATC website and buy all of the DVDs we put out before the show if you don't believe me. They have a very large following, bigger than you could possibly imagine and they still make time for the young detectorists. Not much we can do about it, they will be around for quite a while.

I suppose it depends on the Lawn and who it belongs to. of course no matter what a Landowner says... and Even if they are detecting too & using a Large spade & leaving holes half open at the same time. I would not mimic them.So I guess digging huge holes in a lawn is acceptable then ?..and yes it IS wrong to make holes like that..don't make it personal, go ahead and make a poll thread and see how many votes digging craters in a nice lawn gets. Mike
Its not wrong if you have permission to dig how you want and most people new to the hobby know you should leave a nice lawn looking nice...not trying to make it personal, everyone on TNET is my friend in my mind, you included...Im having fun with this discussion but I have a great sense of humor and don't get upset or offended easily. So I guess digging huge holes in a lawn is acceptable then ?..and yes it IS wrong to make holes like that..don't make it personal, go ahead and make a poll thread and see how many votes digging craters in a nice lawn gets. I don't normally, just got the flu and think its turning into pneumonia so I'm kinda sensitive.
I'll probably be offline awhile if I end up with pneumonia again, that's providing it doesn't kill me this time, temp is high having confusion
Just because someone hasn't found a certain coin does not mean they are bad/new to the hobby, it could very well mean that they haven't been lucky enough to be in an area with it. I'm guessing you haven't ever found 1642 Spanish Reales, so should I label you a bad detector? You can't find whats not there.
Hope you start feeling better.I don't normally, just got the flu and think its turning into pneumonia so I'm kinda sensitive. I'll probably be offline awhile if I end up with pneumonia again, that's providing it doesn't kill me this time, temp is high having confusion
I love the show but know that it is killing our hobby. Now every person that has watched an episode wants to pick up a detector and find the next great treasure.

You should find more large cents in Indiana than they would have in Montana. A seated coin is hard to find here. I just checked population it went back to 1870 and there were only 20,500 in the fourth largest state in the country. I would pretty much bet the farm that you have not found any old tokens from Kalispell Mt and I would not think any the less of your ability to detect. I've found a bunch. They act like they been metal detecting for years and the one show he says its the first large cent he has ever found, I detected for four years and have four large cents now.
