Diggers

Come on guys this thread has gone on enough, all its doin instead of given opions is making enemies with each other from both sides of the fence, cuz one doesnt like the others post, well I dont think thats what any of us,are actually here for. Its a good Forum, with many good people we should just be sharing tips, find stories something thats benefical to the hobby
I don't think anyone is making enemies on here...we can have a good heated discussion without holding grudges...I know Im not mad at anyone...if we all agreed on everything it would get pretty boring.

"You learn more from watching an idiot than listening to a genius"

I strictly watch it for the entertainment value. As for the hobby? It won't effect it to much, I mean, your not going to have googan's all over the place with back hoes digging up stuff. Personally, I think it will be good for the hobby introducing new people to the hobby. Who knows, maybe a senator/governors kid is watching them and wants to get into the hobby. I am hoping for that anyway, especially with the Draconian reg's we have in the Ny/Nj area... to each their own

I was talking with the people and it came up in the conversation. No I'm not one of thise people that blame everything on what happens in movies, Just sayin that just not this show but the rest with there ridiculous pricing of the finds is what's killing it.

I didn't think the pricing was off ? I might be wrong, are you thinking of that wrestler from American diggers, or whatever that horrible show was called ? Now those prices were outrageous. Just mho.

Yeah, the Diggers show gives a POTENTIAL value and a lot of there finds have historical value that makes them worth more...I haven't seen them sale anything, although Ive seen plenty of stuff sold by TNET members, which I have no problem with.

No...they have always had a sense of humor.

Absolutely right, how come having fun is all of a sudden a crime?...Pretty soon human society is going to be so dark and depressive that public enemy number one is gonna' be anybody who's got a smile on their face!

Hey Diggin4nails!! Nice Cobe you have there!! What part of LA are you in?? I'm up in the BR area!! Anyway, GOOD LUCK and GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

This thread and others like it are the best thing that ever happened for the show. The more we debate it, the hotter it gets. It just boils down to personal taste. If you like the show, great. If you don't like the show then don't tune in.

It gets quite old to watch amateur videos with a monotone speaker digging in some park that has been detected 100 times before.

So well said...A while back I watched a you tube from a "popular you tube channel detector guy"...

He said,"...well......look......at......that.......another......clad.....a...ahh.....quarter...yeah...ah.....think....a...that's.....another......clad....quarter....a...yep...sure enough...clad quarter"

...Absolutely riveting entertainment there! ...(And the video did not show anyone repair the hole).

Yes!...You hit the nectar sector right in the roundness!

I can truly say that the Diggers show is the reason I bought my detector. I'm totally new to this hobby and have only about 5 hours behind my coil. I'm one of the new guys " ruining the hobby" I guess!

Are you learning, enjoying finding things, if ur covering ur holes & respecting peoples property, who cares what reason you bought ur machine for, its a hobby for having fun so if ur having fun more power to you, what ruins it is the newer people who make holes everywhere & don't fill them, which I never could get that because there already on the ground at the hole, but oh well, I suggest learn ur machine, have fun, & be respectful

If you're respecting property rights and filling your holes properly then no, you're not ruining the hobby.

New guys don't ruin the hobby. Knuckleheads ruin the hobby. Unfortunately, television sometimes gets knuckleheads interested in something that they normally wouldn't be interested in, particularly if the production crew is hyping things up a bit. A knucklehead buys a detector and spends the afternoon making the local park look like the surface of the moon, someone important notices, and now it's no longer legal to detect at city parks. Other cities and/or the county notice what happened and decide to pre-emptively pass laws against detecting those parks as well. In a fairly short span of time, all the public land in the area is off limits to detectorists, because one guy saw a show on TV about digging things up, but didn't see the part about grooming the turf afterward.

So yeah, some folks get a bit nervous about shows like this. It's not that we don't like new arrivals, but we're worried that some of those new arrivals might not take the time to learn everything that they need to know to keep this hobby sustainable. The television programming, by and large, does not provide that knowledge. The fact that you're here suggests that you're not in that camp.

Everyone here was new once upon a time. I personally think most of the stories about newbies ruining everything are just that STORIES. Welcome to the maddness.

The vast majority of new detectorist know to fill their holes, without being told or seeing it done on a TV show...but there are people that do the wrong thing even when they know its wrong, like someone that throws trash on the ground...seeing people throw trash in a can on TV isn't going to make them start throwing their trash in a can...It would be like watching a fishing show and saying "Oh, they are ruining the hobby and making it dangerous, now every yahoo is going to go buy a boat and they didn't even mention proper boat handling skills on the show" :laughing7::dontknow::laughing7:

If filling your holes was a judgment on how good/bad a show was then there weren't be much to watch anywhere...
How many youtube videos show filling their holes?
As far as acting like clowns... What if they replaced these two with a couple of 70 fat guys that when they found a gold coin they looked at it and slipped it into the pouch not even a smile? But we want to make it more real life so they would of never found that gold coin in the first place... I know I would tune in each and every week to watch them dig up pull tabs and clad every week...

Watching ringy jump around isn't going to make the newbie jump around when they find something. just like not showing filling holes isn't going to make him crater up the park either

Don't mind the stupid antics so much. What is really bad for the hobby is the way every find is given a potential value that is usually extremely high. They don't keep anythig they find, because they are digging for the Archies. Notice the flags and the Archies at the end of evey episode. Makes you wonder if NatGeo isn't trying to purposely sabotage the hobby. Last I heard , the Archies hated us, so why all of the sudden are they our best buds? Anyway, if they are not trying to hurt our hobby I would hate to see it if they were.
After reading the Responsible Metal Detecting article on the Diggers Nat Geo website I tend to agree. Seems like most of the "code of ethics" was written to please the archies. Responsible Metal Detecting | National Geographic Channel

I like the show, however the way they act is a little over board for me. I really hope people that watch the show do not think we are all that nutz.
I my neck of the woods I would not want to bring attention to what I had found, esp if I am hunting is certain parts of detriot.
Love their finds. got mu juices flowing. Come on spring. :)

I love the showy goofy and silly as Ringey and the other doofus are. I have a feeling their targets are either already dug by them because of their technique in swinging their coils for the camera, they don't overlap their swings.

This show posts more inaccurate information about artifacts than I have ever seen. I just accidentally caught an episode of the Diggers show where the two morons are digging a Rev War Fort site near Pittsburgh. They indicate that there is a legend that the Americans ran out of lead and melted down pewterware to make musket balls. When they find one, they indicate that this is the first one EVER found and that it is priceless!!! What a load of absolute bull! "Pewter" musket balls are quite common. I have an entire chapter on them in my soon to be published book "A Guide to Musket Ball and Small Shot Identification". We have excavated them at numerous Rev War battlefields. They found a large (probably Brown Bess) musket ball and state that large musket balls only come from Virginia. Boy am I learning alot from this show!! They also show backed marked REV WAR buttons. Back marking started in 1796.

This is, in my opinion, misleading information that the public will take as fact. Is this the new look for the National Geographic Society?

They give a bad name to metal detecting both hobbyist and archaeologist!!
