Hmm. Emissions regulations are one of the reasons stove makers have tried to improve them.The faint memories of valleys smoked up burning coal once in a while. Yes I recall coal. More to it than design though,size is critical,in relation to space being heated , to run one the right temp (many I ran around 350,i think) gives cleaner burn.
Catalytic type units were used a while but found no favor or incentive to improve,at least around here.Run proper a stove and hardwood is not bad,its start up and tapering off are the challenge.
Burning waste products deserves applause and success will come when simple stoves at reasonable cost start showing up in third world countries. Attempts are being made but far to go. Wood is renewable. Planting in succession works with forethought.Storm damage and recycling too.
The family farm of yore is fading with its woodlot(s) and near self sufficiency but the stove burning fuel lingers. What fuel at what cost and effect deserves notice.
An annual competition with a respectable cash prize for greatest efficiency would be great.
So would examples of tiny heat bills, (yes it happens) in cold climates due to construction of earth berm as well as other highly insulated structures and they do exist.We have built some huge energy wasting structures that heat poorly.
Homes are being built now with lots of "green" material,in harmony with annual winter sun southern exposure,and utilizing thermal mass.
Fuel will be burned in the future,all ways somewhere, especially where technology's reach is short due to location or money.,what can be saved costs less than developing or supplying it.Conserve and save cost through greatest efficiency.
I miss wood heat.Still have some pieces I built for my next version of a wood burner. To me the right draft is going to be key,latest looks interesting but needs tested! My attempt at downflow.
Any one remember Sotz ? Their barrel stove kits heated multiple places I seen them work. Burned even poor quality wood like a modern cigarette,from one end to the other. Any one want to sell one of their auto non electric drafts reasonable?l,o,l,.

Nope she just remembers it from her childhood. If you have ever tried to move a cast iron stove you realize how crazy this is. But just maybe this will increase its resale value.
