Since we really started filtering these things in our world, has health really gotten better? Incidences of cancer, decreasing or rising? Breathing problems such as COPD, decreasing or rising?

Believe me in the long run the money you save buying less wood will pay for the stove.along with (in ca) a substantial tax credit!

Hmm. Emissions regulations are one of the reasons stove makers have tried to improve them.The faint memories of valleys smoked up burning coal once in a while. Yes I recall coal. More to it than design though,size is critical,in relation to space being heated , to run one the right temp (many I ran around 350,i think) gives cleaner burn.
Catalytic type units were used a while but found no favor or incentive to improve,at least around here.Run proper a stove and hardwood is not bad,its start up and tapering off are the challenge.
Burning waste products deserves applause and success will come when simple stoves at reasonable cost start showing up in third world countries. Attempts are being made but far to go. Wood is renewable. Planting in succession works with forethought.Storm damage and recycling too.
The family farm of yore is fading with its woodlot(s) and near self sufficiency but the stove burning fuel lingers. What fuel at what cost and effect deserves notice.
An annual competition with a respectable cash prize for greatest efficiency would be great.
So would examples of tiny heat bills, (yes it happens) in cold climates due to construction of earth berm as well as other highly insulated structures and they do exist.We have built some huge energy wasting structures that heat poorly.
Homes are being built now with lots of "green" material,in harmony with annual winter sun southern exposure,and utilizing thermal mass.
Fuel will be burned in the future,all ways somewhere, especially where technology's reach is short due to location or money.,what can be saved costs less than developing or supplying it.Conserve and save cost through greatest efficiency.
I miss wood heat.Still have some pieces I built for my next version of a wood burner. To me the right draft is going to be key,latest looks interesting but needs tested! My attempt at downflow.
Any one remember Sotz ? Their barrel stove kits heated multiple places I seen them work. Burned even poor quality wood like a modern cigarette,from one end to the other. Any one want to sell one of their auto non electric drafts reasonable?l,o,l,.
A demand of manufacturers not all ways welcome, how much of a demand reflected in its products cost.
Were some one to build efficient waste burners...

Memories! I built the double 55gal barrel heater using the door and flange kit But I welded it together instead of bolting it. It was almost air tite. I think I got 145,000 BtUs out of it. I built it into the wall with most of the barrel inside and it stoked from outside. All the chairs in the house fell apart. lol. That taught me to put the kettle of water on it. I used a manual draft control. I learned it makes a big difference which edge of the draft disc is down. Most people don't know that air comes down one side of the pipe and hot air goes up the other side. Learned that as a mason laying up fireplaces. Boy do they waste heat unless you have one with a fire form.
I even tried a Columbia wood stove for several years. Heated and cooked with it . It would use coal or wood.
I am thinking about designing a new one that will heat water for the 2K' of PEX tubing I put in the concrete floor when I built the house. Use to heat the house with a HW heater, but electric has really gone up. I have 4" of wrapped fiberglass in the walls and 2" of EPS on the outside of the studs. I think in the spring I will design and build a wood burner. Frank...

This is my opinion.
This is an attempt to force the little guy into helping reduce the carbon footprint..the clear proof in that is our government would not ratify the Kyoto accord now known as the Kyoto protocol...of course they will not jump on board for clean air, if they did all their buddies in the huge energy sector, that burn coal to produce energy with impunity, would stop lining said politicians pockets..it is akin to the current national fracking debate, sure we all know the chems used are terrible, but the good old epa has exempted that industry from the clean water and air act.

Why ? That's easy money...so guess if we the little guy could pad pockets better the epa would seek clean air elsewhere
Oh yeah that's right, going after the cattle and dairy farmers because you know them steers and cows fart a lot of methane

I could go on for hours on this subject, since I am passionate about it, but I made my voice heard on it.

Hay the heck with the regs. This summer I will design and build a wood burning heater. It will heat the 2000' of PEX tubing in my floor. The flue pipe will run thru my spring house and keep my pipes from freezing. I probably have enough down timber on the farm to last several seasons and about 4 more acres of timber.
I am even thinking about a thermocouple to generate low voltage for LED lighting. I will let Mother Nature pay most of my electric bill. Frank...
OH, this isn't about metal detecting, well maybe the off season. LOL

I had an all electric house. My electric bill ran in the neighborhood of $30 a month. Then along came a drought, and the hydro electric dams were at all time lows. People were told to conserve or we would be having our power cut off at certain times, rolling blackouts I think they called them. People conserved, I installed wood heat for one thing, and the electric company started getting alarmed, people were conserving too much and power company income was down, waaay down. Power company got permission from State to raise rates, and now I heat with natural gas, and on top of that I've insulated the walls and ceiling, and installed double pain windows and my electric bill is over $100 in the summer, and upwards of $180 in the winter, all for doing the good deed of trying to conserve. If I still heated with wood, the power bill would be the same. I heated with wood when I was able to mostly get free wood where I worked, but being retired and unable to get my own wood I'm stuck. And at this point I could go on a rant, so will just stop and try and reduce my blood pressure.

Mother nature probably puts more smoke into the air than man does from stoves and fireplaces. And if the libs are SO CONCERNED about the environment than why are we going to mercury laced light bulbs? I got enough of the old ones to last several years anyway.

Frank, I heat exclusively with wood pellets. One small stove and a pellet furnace. I to have per installed in my floor and plan on installing a stainless steel loop in the firebox of the furnace with a circulation pump and just continually circulate. I think i can cut dramatically my pellet usage even more...

Trees are a renewable resource, and firewood is a byproduct of harvests, and used to be left to rot, and went unused. Now we have the capacity to use this wood for heat, and cut the dependency on fossil fuels. The city of Burlington's electric power company has a wood burning generation plant, and the State has heating plants for office complexes in Waterbury and Montpelier. The Plant in Montpelier is now being expanded to heat most of the downtown city. Now tell me that our progressive/liberal Gov't. here in the State hasn't gone over the emmissions question? These plants are so well filtered, that at most times all you see is steam being released. It's just another example of some people need to be critical of anything they don't agree with, or understand......Gary
