I was at Wally World in the frozen section... and this young girl is buying big bags of various frozen burritos.. so i think to myself "she really likes those"... so i say to her... "those must be good"...

She says "yeah they are pretty good but i am buying that many because i have 6 kids".

I am sure my smile weakened slightly out of surprise.

Generation time is more important to population growth than most people understand. Babies having babies is the model for rapid population growth. There are cultural factors that influence generation time. After the Irish potato famine for example, population growth in Ireland dropped dramatically - but not because the number of children born per female fell (it did slightly), but more because couples chose to delay the start of their families. I remember when our babies were born and we met people younger than us who were visiting their new grandchildren.

As me Pappy used to say: "The rich get richer and the poor have children."

THE ADMIRAL and I have been married 41+ years and never got to the point that we thought it was a good idea to have a kid. There's more than plenty and ours wouldn't be missed.

IN THIS day and age...

People who pop out a bunch of kids for the reason of "we want lots of kids"... are only thinking of themselves and are in my opinion selfish... and definitely a contributing factor to the problematic World in which we all now live.

In the current times... it is definitely a form of irresponsibility with the lack of consideration of others including the children themselves.

I know it mostly it stems from the want to reproduce for someone else to carry on "your legacy"...

But the problem is the feeling that more than a couple of kids is not enough to do this.

Go to any Wally World in any big city & you'll see who is having all the kids. I know many of the parents are undocumented, kids born here are citizens........the beat goes on.

More than just my room mate, have friends who are from Canada who visit us and same issue. They hate the wait. Waiting a year to see a specialist is not for me, they can keep their National Health Service medicine programs. I perfer being able to see a doctor with out waiting months and months and months.
"Almost 5 million people in England are waiting for hospital treatment, and more than 400,000 have already seen their surgery delayed for at least a year, NHS figures reveal.

Doctors warned that the huge numbers were ?stomach-churning? and showed that Covid?s disruption of normal care had left patients in pain, agony and fear about their health"

?Following the most difficult year many of us have ever faced, we are now heading into another crisis ? the number of people on waiting lists at record levels, coupled with exhausted doctors,? said Dr Rob Harwood, the chair of the British Medical Association?s consultants committee.

https://www.theguardian.com/society...iting-list-numbers-in-england-hit-record-high

Living here in western NY, we see Canadians come all the time for our health care, especially into Rochester NY. They and my Friends from canada all had the same issues with the Canadian system. Along with the wait lists the lack of freedom of choice bothered the ones I talk to as well, you only get to chose from the list of docs the gov't provides. Any that can afford it with serious conditions came here. Not only because the wait times would let their diseases progress further doing more damage and becoming harder to treat, but because they were able to select the best doctors and specialists in their fields. That and for quite some time we lead the world in medical technologies, so treatment options were better in some cases as well. I fact the only thing good they have ever said to me about the canadian system is the cost at time of service and that everyone is covered "equally"....

I'm in northern Maryland and I think the last really bad snow was in 1996. That's what I remember. A 12" snow isn't much, the state and counties do a great job here. At least I get something for my tax dollars. The snows haven't piled up and up like they can in other parts of the country. Last actual ice storm was maybe 2011 or so, but power was only out 1 day. Without flooding like in a hurricane, they get it back on quickly. First thing with a move is to count your pennies and job hunt. If you (or anyone) owns real estate or has a year-long lease, those can be additional issues. It's not all that easy to move cross country.

You must have forgot the double-whammy snows of 2010? 25 inches Feb 5-6 and then another 19.5 inches on Feb. 9-10. THAT was something.

I haven't forgotten (but my memory of actual events is that of the facts rather than an agenda). For someone who likes to shovel snow at his own pace all day, it was glorious! My daughter came out to help after the first storm, shoveled furiously for about two hours, flung the shovel down and exclaimed that "this is B.S." and that she would base her imminent college choice decision strictly upon snowfall potential. I just carried on, shaking my head and wondering "I never asked anyone for help...". I celebrated my 55th birthday by peacefully shoveling that second storm.

Every snowstorm is different. The snow has different textures and responds to the tools and techniques that we apply to it differently.

We didn't get that much up here. A few miles makes a huge difference in snowfall. At least it didn't seem that much because my road and driveway were taken care of immediately and I didn't have to deal with it. For 2010, it was worse than 2020, when my uncle and brother died within weeks of each other. I remember snow on the ground that 2nd week of March that year. I also remember resenting snow on the ground in mid March!

Try living in Minnesota or North Dakota in dead of winter with snow drifts over 15 feet tall and unable to even find your car much less dig it out because it is buried under 8 feet of snow.

Last December we had 40" of snow in a 24 hr period. I'm one of those lucky "vital employee" workers and made it to work on time, and I live in a pretty rural area. We are used to it and prepared for it. If need we can go months without a trip to a grocery store and can do heat and hot-water with wood (and have 17 acres of woods + 3 of lawn & gardens).

This isn?t political folks first of all. Unless you are a fortunate one or sun most are not. Point is western Pennsylvania used to be a nicer place late 60s early 70s, job wise it was here, Sharon steel, Westinghouse, General Motors, Delphi in Ohio. All gone or a fraction of there old self, to be truth most plants are gone. Point making I?m tired of living around here, not trying to run from anything other than these dead end jobs and the disgusting human beings that are pathetic. Where to go I?m asking you being in late 50s I prefer warmer weather not necessarily Florida, being no pension I must work until I?m dead, but being that confirmed I want to enjoy the time I have in a more pleasant environment if you no what I mean, I?m rather work and struggle at a tiki bar than meltdown here, anyone have any reasonable places or advice. I?m in good health but yeah I?ve had enough folks my family are passed on so you get my drift, thanks for reading peace of mind is priceless it?s not about material things chasing false narratives, god bless

In keeping with your original posting... no, the America you grew up in is gone, but so too is the America my father grew up in and my grandfather before him and, and, and....each succeeding generation gets to decide what the country is going to look like, how it is going to be, how it is going to be defined. And you know what? I am OK with that. One thing is for certain as far as I am concerned... I would never want to live in the country the founding fathers lived in. I like flush toilets and electricity along with a bunch of other stuff.

Look you must be some what self efficient job etc before you start having kids why I see so many one parent families it?s sickening, do you no what that means folks, no solid foundation, probably public assistance simply shameful. I no because I never knew my dad so I have a right to be pissed at these girls and guys start having kids and no dad, I?m finished, grandma and grandpa help please. The kid is at a serious disadvantage so sad. Being selfish and not understanding the massive undertaking of bringing up a kid and multiple kids unbelievable,

Quit with the generalizations and insults. Many single parents out there busting their asses and raising their families and succeeding. I was a single parent at 17, worked my way through college with a kid in tow, got a great job, had great career and am now very comfortably retired.

Single parent here as well....I totally agree with 49er12 though. Kid has gone through hard times they shouldn't have had to endure. Sure we are fine and succeeding...but if I had not had a kid at 18 and had been responsible, they would have had a much better life. It really is essential to understand how your choices and having a kid while single young and poor will impact the kids life as well.

I hate to be rude BUT, if people went from the North East to Florida and then went back It was Florida's gain. One of the nicest things I found was that people did not have the negative North East attitude. Personally I love Maine, it is a great place to visit but not many people want to move there. You must sleep through the winters in the North East, enjoy.
