I've found a few red jasper beads, but never banded slate. Killer find that I know made your day.

It is amazing what they can do with electron microscopes these days. The science they are doing on beads and pottery is incredible. They can actually tell the general region a piece of pottery came from by analyzing the sand and clay composition and comparing it do data samples all over the country in some cases.

THAT said, it is then really interesting to put together the trade networks between tribes and native nations from so long ago. As an example, they may find that your Kentucky bead actually originated in SW Arizona or something, leading them to look for more evidence of trade between the regions at a certain point in time.

That's high quality Huronian banded slate, and a beauty. The glacier brought this type of high quality slate down from Lake Huron. You can find that stuff in IN and OH, pretty much south and west of Lake Huron along the track of the glacier. I'm in IL a little farther west and there is no Huronian flint in the glacial till here. Nice one, I have seen a few banded slate beads, but not many. Really cool find.

I wonder if it was anciently salvaged from an artifact (bannerstone, gorget, etc.) or if the maker just realized that it was uncommon material and chose to maximize all the material he/she could.

I have seen it used on other artifacts but not on beads. This must have traveled south to BG from Ohio area where this is a more
common material.

I was thinking the same thing Joshua. Maybe a salvaged Gorget or Pendant. Very cool piece either way.
