Found this at a civil war battle site. It appears the soldier carved under the head of the bullet. Any idea what he may have been making. Or was he modifying it somehow? Thanks.

Looks like the pawn from a chess set. I have heard of bullets being carved as game pieces by the troops during periods between battles.

They had one like that on Dig Wars.

...I get all my medal detecting info from "Dig Wars" and "Diggers". So much like real life!

Although, I tend to scare people at the park when I scream like the tall guy when I find something... :dontknow:

Yea. It did cross my mind that it could have been carved for a game of chess but it didn't look like it was carved out enough. Not sure. Ya really think that was the intension. Cause I have really wanted to find a personalized bucket. That would be cool

I think it is a pawn. They wouldn't have the time to make the pieces perfect. Back then things were created for utilitarian reasons; everything wasn't "fancy" like it is today. Nice find!

Regardless of what it's being carved into its still a neat find.. Just got to wonder why it was'nt finished.. Maybe the carver should have been paying better attention and not carving bullets..

Didn't think of that option. Hope it wasn't so.

That's awesome. I am glad to own a personal piece like this. Thanks guys. I found it in a site where I know a battle broke out. I have found friction primers from cannons there as well as us navy buttons. The bullet appears to have been strikes by something. Has a deep cut in one side. Thanks again all for the info.

excellent find. besides being really cool, it has a really nice patina too

Very cool find... Congrats :icon_thumright:

One of the coolest things I have seen on here. Just awesome.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Happy hunting o all!

Very nice find. It looks like it could be carved to look some other things as well

I have seen carve chess bullets that would blow your mind. Most of there time was spent marching or in camp and very little fighting. Very nice find

That's so cool. I just love anything that has been personalized I have seen belt buckles on here that had initials carved into them. So cool.

Me too but this one was found on a battlefield. Certain regiments spent most of their time in battles while others so no fighting. I guess the military was just as disorganized then as now. We never learn from the errors of our past.

I heard some soliders use to bite the bullets if they were in pain. Could it be bite marks?

No. The cuts look way to smooth. Like a knife done it. Thanks
