Hi everyone...I dont post here to often, but I thought the colonial hunters would appreciate this buckle....I am from Mass and I hunt mainly cellar holes..I have been very lucky over my 2 years of metal detecting..Old coins ect..I have found a couple of complete shoe buckles....Anyways I got out on saturday before the snow hit here...I was saying all day i want a shoe buckle...Never found one, but i did find this late 1700's Knee Buckle..My second complete knee buckle....I was extremely happy with this sweet buckle ;D

Re: Late 1700's Knee Buckle

Very nice! Considering the smaller size it's funny we don't see more found.

I am drooling on my keyboard right now. Welcome to Treasurenet, Brian! Grab a cup of coffee, sit down, and post more often on here. I'd love to see your finds made on the MA frontier!

Welcome to Tnet! And what a remarkable find! Mass. has been good to me in the buckle dept. as well. But no knee buckles!

Re: Late 1700's Knee Buckle

outstanding condition!!! that is the beauty of cellerhole digs, none of all that mean old fertilizer or ploughs to make things worse than they are, the total lack of corrosion and the great patina of years in the ground makes yours one of the best colonial finds I've seen lately (we've been froze up for a couple of weeks now )

great job !!

Re: Late 1700's Knee Buckle

Really nice Brian! Being a fellow Massassonian, I think you did real well on this. We were spared the snowstorm as I live in Pittsfield. Congrats...Hogge :headbang:

Re: Late 1700's Knee Buckle

Nice Find !

How do you tell a Knee Buckle from any other ?

Example

Matched set of shoe buckles and knee buckles, c 1775.

In this photo, the knee buckle is obvious amongst the much larger Shoe buckles, so size is how you tell.........

BTW, Brian, that is a nice one!

Don, what you say is absolutely true if you're talking about late 18th century buckles. But the early Jacobean shoe buckle styles (1660-1720) were much smaller. Those huge Georgian buckles didn't become popular until after 1750. You definitely have a bunch of fine and complete examples. Thanks for posting those.
