I think I have come up with a new hobby :dontknow:

Ever wanted to combine Fishing & Detecting ;D Now you can with new improved magnet recovery fishing - MAGNOFISHING :laughing7: (please think of a better name?)

Normally you have to swing these from a rope or cord which has several disadvantages. You can try any water, I guess swimming holes or crossing points are worth a go.

I tested my theory but somewhat failed as the 3mm paracord (lifts 250kg!) was too thick for my biggest reel (it did cast well but only limited distance, so took it off & used a longer hand cord). So to improve my idea, I need a bigger depth of reel and/or a thinner cord.

Without the rod & reel, this is a very cheap hobby. Your be amazed with the size of some of the objects these lift.

Is there much interest out there? Have many people tried this or even combined it with a rod? I would like to see any results. Plus if there is a big enough interest then I'm sure the MODs will make a new Forum, because as far as I can tell, there is no other :dontknow:

I spent 2 hours with pretty poor results but it was fun. Its like fishing, when you hook (stick) onto a big object (fish) you are thinking; 'please don't come off'. This happen with my largest catch a 3ft long iron bar :o

Also got a butterfly knife which are illegal in the UK, but the local park drunk took it of my hands, in hindsight I hope he doesn't use it :-[

I've been magnet fishing for years. Caught hundreds of hooks, knives, even whole tackle boxes. The best thing I ever caught was a 1967 schwinn stingray. I got a giant magnet and tied a hundred feet of rope to it and started throwing off the pier. You think people look at you funny and ask a lot of questions when you're MDing...

This sounds really cool! How about a way to "troll" with a detector coil, and the drop the magnet to fish out what you hit on?

I was working on the same idea. I had even tested the angle at which 2-250 lb. magnets needed to be connected at to grab and hold a 16pounder. Had a boat ready (aluminum, of course) and was ready to go and get my iron relic license. I was hoping the catch limit was enough to be worthwhile. Then I found out that Georgia isn't even a catch-and-release state. According to their web site, all artifacts in the water belong to the state. What a bunch of socialists. Isn't that something like all the swans in England either belong to the Queen or the Duke of somebody? Maybe the queen wants a cut on the nails you found! Ah, government. As they say: Let it rot.

Now, to add some realism to this story, I just recently I met a man that did some major detecting in the 1960'S in a valley where they built I-75, which also just happend to be right up the middle of a battlefield. His collection was fantastic. As we were talking, he told me he had 5 shells hanging in his garage to be de-explosified later. One day, he noticed some black gunk seeping out and creeping down his wall. He promptly took them out to the river and tossed them off a bridge. I think maybe this action inspired whatever song it was about the Tallahachee bridge. He said he later regretted the rash action but could never find them. I think the flooding washed them away. Worst of all, this was at a time when the carpet mills were putting a huge amount of STUFF in the river, probably would give you 100% instant cancer if you would have gone diving in it. This new information came 1 year after I backed off the MAGNOFISHING idea. Perhaps none of the bunch of us are so crazy after all, but let's not have a mangnofishing convention.

I would love to do that around my lakes, but with my luck i would get a handgun and while pulling it in hits a stick and pulls the trigger shooting my face off. or a cop pulls up just as i'm drying a gun that i find and i get arrested or shot. Either cenerio is very unlikely but i'm just saying it would probably happen to me if anyone. :-[

Welxome, Squiggy

I have a 150 pound lifting magnet. I havent used it much but I have pulled up knives and fishing gear. Its fun and people do look at you strange.

It has been around for awhile. Gib Thompson used it once in the 1970's to find a drowned diver in Clear Lake. Documentation in "How to Become a Professional Treasure Hunter", c. 1979 by Gib Thompson. The story was reprinted from Discover, Jan-Feb. 1978 issue. Diver died in Clear Lake in August, 1977. Gib was asked to help find the body.

Gib used to be the head salesperson at White's Electronics in Sweet Home. He told me this was one treasure he was both happy to find (closure for the family), and unhappy (would YOU like to find a body?).

Body was recovered using this method: a 225-pound magnet with 200 feet of cable. Body was lying face up in approximately 18 inches of silt and mud. The magnet would attach to the dive tanks on the body, but the suction from the bottom made recovery of the body difficult, and required nearly a week. A White's Salvagemaster was used to find the target before using the magnet.

Look up non standard magnets,,,,

I sent this thread off to a friend after the first couple of posts and he replied with a link to a fishing magnet. Looks like fun.

http://www.magnetsource.com/Solutions_Pages/holdingmags.html

Looks like this magnet from Harbor Freight: $14.99, 250lb pull (there are 100lb and 150lb magnets for $4.99 and $7.99 respectively)

http://www.harborfreight.com/retrieving-magnet-250-lb-pull-36905.html

They also have this waterproof one but it doesn't appear to be nearly as good:

Harbor Freight is where I got mine. HF rocks. But I am not convinced that there is a good alignment for picking up a cannon ball. Shell, maybe. The physics of a sphere is different that an cylinder. That is the biggest problem I have yet to work out. That and the State of Georgia. Is it nighthawking when one uses a magnet????

What a topic! Applause just for the interesting responses it received.

Ok, Mr. Censor, I was just joking about Nighthawking. Wouldn't do it, wouldn't recommend it, and won't stand for it. Hope that is a strong enough stand!

Night hawking, by definition and situation, doesn't even :thumbsup:come close...

Fantastic thread. I can see dropping this in while fishing and checking it every so often...

I have a setup for this. Just haven't tried it out yet. I have about 50' of rope on my rare earth magnet.
