I think I have come up with a new hobby :dontknow:

Ever wanted to combine Fishing & Detecting ;D Now you can with new improved magnet recovery fishing - MAGNOFISHING :laughing7: (please think of a better name?)

Normally you have to swing these from a rope or cord which has several disadvantages. You can try any water, I guess swimming holes or crossing points are worth a go.

I tested my theory but somewhat failed as the 3mm paracord (lifts 250kg!) was too thick for my biggest reel (it did cast well but only limited distance, so took it off & used a longer hand cord). So to improve my idea, I need a bigger depth of reel and/or a thinner cord.

Without the rod & reel, this is a very cheap hobby. Your be amazed with the size of some of the objects these lift.

Is there much interest out there? Have many people tried this or even combined it with a rod? I would like to see any results. Plus if there is a big enough interest then I'm sure the MODs will make a new Forum, because as far as I can tell, there is no other :dontknow:

I spent 2 hours with pretty poor results but it was fun. Its like fishing, when you hook (stick) onto a big object (fish) you are thinking; 'please don't come off'. This happen with my largest catch a 3ft long iron bar :o

Also got a butterfly knife which are illegal in the UK, but the local park drunk took it of my hands, in hindsight I hope he doesn't use it :-[

Sounds good. :D Or maybe you could rent one of these guy's after harvest. :laughing7: And plow up & down the field in. :laughing7: I know a few places I'd like to take one. :D
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Interesting idea,
A lot of my best finds have come from the areas where people would have been boarding and disembarking from boats.
the newer magnetic materials are very powerful.
Too bad they haven't come up with ones that grab non-ferrous ::)

That's the downside, only gets modern coins & your never going to get Silver :(

I've got the set up, but I haven't yet found a very good place to go.

Actually I have thought about this, (when I walk past shopping mall fountains, or wishing wells)but never tried.

I like this idea but I'm concerned about the actual practicality of doing it from a pier. I would imagine that you could end up getting your line snagged pretty quickly and lose your magnet and your rope. If you were doing this from a small boat it might be easier.

I would be more interested in pulling out old guns that someone may have ditched. If I had a boat, I'd try trolling around bridges and other locations where someone might drive over and fling a gun out the window into the water below. Of course, if you do find a gun then you are faced with the moral dilemma of whether or not to turn it in.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. My brother is big into kayaking and this could be an interesting activity to do while meandering down a stream.

I'm NOT a fisherman, but what if you used the stronger fishing line intended for those big trophy ocean fish? It would fit on a reel, and if it can haul up the big fish, should be able to handle anything your magnet could grab.
At the very least, you're getting rid of sharp, poky metal objects that someone would step on, so I think it's a community service, as well as an interesting, er, hobby! :hello2:

Keep us posted on your finds with this new method ;D

let us know how it goes, when you do?

This is not a new phenomin...been used in the States and elsewhere for eons (that's many years to you brits :laughing7:)

Usually used to find steel or iron objects in water wells, kibo's and bridges. (and for your info, a kibo is a military term for an outhouse , more commonly used in the rural colonies )

Guns and knives are probably the most common find...

I know its old hat, but are you saying people have combined it with rod & reel?

Price of metals go up any more I think I will be doing Magnofishing myself.

Rod and reel, and handline both...

In fact, many years ago we used a R & R to recover a fly rod that was inadvertently dropped into a lake...

Its not uncommon for police and military to use for search and recovery...

Probably not a bad hobby but is of no value for precious metals

A few years back, I heard of these being used to recover antique swords and the like from canals (I think in Holland)

Their are a few guy's in Russia that are doing this to get WWII Relics out of rivers .
And by there videos they have done very well !
They also had a few rare earth magnets that were very powerful that they used to walk over the land .
They found quite a lot doing this as the magnet would pull down to the metal .
You might do a search on this as they had some sort of reel that they where using , it looked like a deep sea fishing type reel on a metal pole . But it worked.
