I think I have come up with a new hobby :dontknow:

Ever wanted to combine Fishing & Detecting ;D Now you can with new improved magnet recovery fishing - MAGNOFISHING :laughing7: (please think of a better name?)

Normally you have to swing these from a rope or cord which has several disadvantages. You can try any water, I guess swimming holes or crossing points are worth a go.

I tested my theory but somewhat failed as the 3mm paracord (lifts 250kg!) was too thick for my biggest reel (it did cast well but only limited distance, so took it off & used a longer hand cord). So to improve my idea, I need a bigger depth of reel and/or a thinner cord.

Without the rod & reel, this is a very cheap hobby. Your be amazed with the size of some of the objects these lift.

Is there much interest out there? Have many people tried this or even combined it with a rod? I would like to see any results. Plus if there is a big enough interest then I'm sure the MODs will make a new Forum, because as far as I can tell, there is no other :dontknow:

I spent 2 hours with pretty poor results but it was fun. Its like fishing, when you hook (stick) onto a big object (fish) you are thinking; 'please don't come off'. This happen with my largest catch a 3ft long iron bar :o

Also got a butterfly knife which are illegal in the UK, but the local park drunk took it of my hands, in hindsight I hope he doesn't use it :-[

I bet you start hoping for a shopping trolley to get it all home :laughing7:

I remember a WWII thread a few years ago from some guys in Russia who used one in a lake where a battle had occurred when nazis attacked. LOTS of live ammo, including bombs! So if you blow up during magnofishing, Crusader, we will know you died happy whilst treasure hunting!
If only magnets picked up gold and silver, then we'd all be rich.

I take it the soil is still too hard to penetrate unless you have a jackhammer?

Have fun, there's great stuff in that silt.

We need a magnofishing thread added to TN, don't we?

The pasture is way to hard to dig, we had the driest May since records began.

I'm thinking of suggesting a Magnet Recovery forum?

I've gone to the docks several times with a fishing magnet and came away with knifes, lures, pliers, scissors and many fish hooks. Waiting to catch my first handgun! Too bad it doesn't work on U.S. coins.

Magnet Recovery Forum. Yes! It's evident from the responses here that people do it and there is a general interest. You should pitch the idea to the powers that be here at TN. I like the term "Magnofishing" better, but people might not know what that means.

Are you going through MD withdrawals? We've had so much moisture here, I'd like to re-direct the clouds in your direction.

:toothy2:

Would magnets pick up some old coins there?

Withdrawals - not really, as we lucked in last week & found a large set-a-side stubble field we can do. It should tide us over for some weeks.

Old Coins was a good question, as it mostly works on modern stuff. However, I was suprised to test & find out it works on some some Roman Bronze Coins which I guess must have small amounts of iron content.
