I picked up a metal detector today to fool around with on the weekend and took it out into an old corn field behind my house. I found this buckle in about 4 inches of mud. I live in Exeter, NH so there is a lot of history starting with the revolution all the way up through the civil war. I also pulled a musket ball in the same area, so I think this could have been a military camp at some point. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jay.

I think trk5capt may be correct. I found this picture online. 1870 Navy Officers Sword Belt.

Interesting how this belt plate is made to copy the 1852 two-piece plate. I wonder what year(s) the Navy used reproduction (look alike) two-piece belt plates.

Nice find, Jim

what about post civil war Jim?

I know nothing about these buckles. How does the belt attach? Is there something missing? ???

i belive if you look at the back of it on the right there is a lip that would hold to a brass ring around the strap then the other end would be into a piece on the other side
