Made it back out to my colonial field for a few hours this weekend where I previously found five 1700's coins and several flat buttons. I was able to work my way through the iron and recover a few more buttons, part of a pewter spoon, couple small buckles, an 1850 'O' half dime, and what appears to be a worn 1/2 reale which has a star scratched on it. :icon_scratch: I also recovered another silver piece which appears to be in the shape of a small column? But what is interesting is it also appears to have a star scratched in the end of it. Any help on identifying the piece or any explanation on the stars would be appreciated.

Thanks for looking. :icon_thumright:

Colonial Kentucky strikes again! :headbang: You have been unearthing interesting early items. I always look forward to your threads. Western Kentucky has more in store for you, bocephus. :icon_thumleft:

Kirk :hello:

Nice finds Bocephus! Congrats!

A couple of possibilities on the "stars".

As crudely as they are scratched, possibly made by a child, for whatever reason. :icon_scratch:

Or, going by the 1/2 reale, which appears to have been worn as a pendant, (note the hole for possibly hanging on a necklace,) the "star" is upside down. This type of star is often connected to satanism.
The two points up = horns and the one point down would be the "head" of a man. :o

Neither of which would distract from the fact that it's a great find. Congratulations!! :hello2: :hello2:

Well I'm sure this isn't why you're seeing stars BUT this is interesting;

"The 5 pointed star started in the Revolutionary War and was a symbol of defiance. It did indeed stand that there was a male member of the household that was serving AGAINST the crown. This, however, did not last long since the British troops would summarily burn these houses down.

It was widely used in the South during the Civil War. There would be multiple stars depending on the number of family members serving. Some houses had one, some had 5."

nice collection of finds! congrats on all the silver!

Nice finds and site! Never know what might come up. HH, Mike

Some more nice Finds from old Kentuck :thumbsup:. what do you think the oval piece is with the 2 holes in it. I always believed them to be inlay pieces for a musket :dontknow:. There has been quite a few found, but I don't think they have ever been positive ided.

The stars are interesting and always cool to find something like that, just gives a personal touch a site.

Bill
