Neighbours Backyard Finds *Updated* Unusual Find & English Coin!

Received permission to hunt my neighbours yard today. Both our homes were built in 1928 as a "make-work project" that were built by General Motors workers. My neighbours a long-haul truck driver and is never home. It was very muddy in this area as we've had a lot of rain lately. The mud/dig trail you can see through the middle of his yard isn't as bad as it looks! :laughing7:

Found the usual metal junk, a couple of 1940's pennies and an unusual metal cap of sorts. Was hoping somebody might be able to tell me what it says and possibly what it's function was? :dontknow: I think the writing is German as the eagle looks of German origin.

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!
Dave

*Got back to the neighbours yard again today for an hour before being chased away by heavy rain! Found this 1940 English Penny . . . they sure made them large back then!* :o

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Hunted Neighbours Backyard - Unusual Find

The Latin translation is “GOD IS OUR HOPE”. The center has a 3 legged Teutonic Eagle. These are modeled after the type used by British Mercenary Hessian Soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

I am 95% sure yours is a reproduction, as the real ones were made out of a different material.

Thanks very much relichunters! I very much appreciate your help with this buttons translation. It looks to have been in the ground for quite a long period of time, so I'm wondering if it really is a repro? :icon_scratch:

Thanks again,
Dave

Re: Hunted Neighbours Backyard - Unusual Find

That's a cool find, the type that gets the detective juices flowing...but based on the iron back I would say it's a relatively modern blazer button.

agreed, its a repro of a famous button :icon_thumright:

Re: Hunted Neighbours Backyard - Unusual Find

As I found out, a button can be in the ground long enough to rot and still be real but not real enough. Back rotted out, brass corroded into holes. Button company had been around 125 years, but the Eagle/anchor/cannon button was not military and still available at JOANN'S . Try looking there for yours, who knows? Disappointing, but a fun story anyway.

Re: Hunted Neighbours Backyard - Unusual Find

Pretty sure I found one too. Rare as hens.

Thanks very much romeo-1. I've come to realize that you probably right about it being a repro! :icon_thumright:

Re: Neighbours Backyard Finds *Updated* Unusual Find & English Coin!

Hi Dave, ain't that Penny big!
guess what ?
I dug a 1937 yesterday, what's the odds we both dig a George VI the same day?
Well I spent a while trying to translate your button, I knew they weren't German words, It's Latin, here's the scoop:
“Es Devs Spes Nostra”. The Latin translation is “GOD IS OUR HOPE”. The center has a 3 legged Teutonic Eagle, which actually looks like a domestic chicken . It is modeled after the type used by British Mercenary Hessian Soldiers during the American Revolutionary War.
Cool button

Re: Neighbours Backyard Finds *Updated* Unusual Find & English Coin!

i found a modern version of that button it is some kind of Haitian military or navy button

Hey Herbie, thanks very much for the research you did in IDing the button for me! :icon_thumright: I have a feeling after reading everyone else's input here that it is defiantly a much later repro. How much later, nobody seems to know? :dontknow:

Thanks,
Dave
