Today I pulled this thing out of the dirt at an old spot that I have been hitting lately. It seems to be reeded, kinda lika a harmonica but round. The whole business is 7" long. The round, reeded piece is 2 1/2".

Thanks for any help, VPR

Looks like an end-plate from an electric motor, starter or generator.

The riveted plates look like reeds. My guess is a rotary siren. (Air raid or similar)

Agree'd... those are reeds, or at least exactly like reeds. I too am ruling out a round pitch harp (like double aa stated) that you might blow into because of so many reeds and the long piece...

Any chance it's a toy... a top maybe that creates a sound when twirled?

Both ends look straight (not spiraled) to me. All of the reeds are exactly the same so if it is some kind of "noise machine" the sound would not change. I am also imagineing some kind of tube that would have covered everything.

Thanx for the help. I am really stumped on this one.

Keep in mind that even though it looks like musical reeds (1), there are reeds used for carburetion and for compressor valves(2).. Musical reeds are usually different sizes for different notes. These are all the same size.

Check out the reed valves on this homeade pulsejet. Just something to think about.

I'll just say that it looks ALOT like the piece on the Uhaul trailer that I used to move back down here to Florida.
The locking mechanism had went bad, and I took a look at it before they replaced it, and it looked VERY similar to that part.
It clicked as you turned it, tightening more each time as it screwed down.
Anyway, that "might" be what it is...

I would lean towards the carburetion/compressor idea based the observation on different notes/tones for musical reeds.

I found a similar looking disc.

That looks very similar. This should be solvable.

Maybe part of a filtration system, say, air or fuel?

:icon_pirat: I worked on very old hand pumps many years ago. The inside was either a leather washer or some wildly designed local "improvement" over the old system/ The part you have looks like a reed valve type that was used in the smaller neck kitchen type pump. There would be a check valve at the lower end of the downpipe and this reed would be used to bring water up the pipe to the sink. Pushing the handle down raised the valve and water run into the sink. Pulling up on the handle run the reed or washer down into the water standing in the downpipe and the reeds allowed the water to pass through the reeds. As you pushed the handle down the process would repeat. They looked like these pictures of Old Hand Pumps. They came in all sorts of designs and sizes.
