Now It All Makes Sense!!!!!!!!

You just have to go with works for you!

So far you're doing GREAT! Keep it up!

The dies for the Massachusetts coins were first produced by Joseph Callender, an engraver located on State Street in Boston, who had apprenticed at Revere's shop. In mid 1788, the state decided Callender's fee of 24 shillings per die was overpriced, so they gave the contract to a young twenty-two year old engraver in Newberryport, Jacob Perkins, who accepted a fee of one percent of all the coins struck using his dies. According to Crosby Perkins's dies can be distinguished from Callender's in that Perkins used a closed letter S that looks somewhat like an eight, while the earlier dies by Callender have a distinctly open letter S. Over the life of the mint, Perkins produced twenty six dies for which it has been estimated he received £3 18s or 3s per die. We do not know if Callender's charge was per die or per pair of dies, even assuming it was per pair of dies his fee per die would be 12s, substantially more than Perkin's 3s!
The costs of the mint were far higher than had originally been estimated. The committee had not even factored in the cost of dies! As costs mounted the state decided to conduct an audit of the minting operation. On November 5, 1788, the results of the audit were signed by Governor John Hancock and presented to the General Court. It was discovered £2,136 5s7d of the Commonwealth's funds had been expended to produce a total of £939 in coppers, leaving a net loss of £1,197 5s7d. Each coin cost more than double its face value to produce, just the inverse of the predictions in the initial report!

Massachusetts Coppers: Introduction

Wouldn't it be luckier to like 88 posts?

Funny you mention that cause I thought of that soon after. But where does it end my friend? I could shoot for 88888888! 8 8's now that would be super lucky. And I love you buddy! Take that damn pin out of me and get the Vino doll out

Hey did I actually teach you something today? Lol. I'm gonna mark that on my calendar. A first for sure

I was hoping we'd move past this. :laughing7:

I do agree, Rocker press is not hammered. This all rings a bell now so I'm pretty sure I read a little about that years ago, but obviously it did not stay with me.

So you only have 7 more things to teach me to become a guru. Good thing you're only 38. :)

Ok we can move past this. But I'm not mature enough to not point it out first :laughing7: possibly in the next 30 years I can come up with 7 more things....but I doubt it

Hey Ahab... are you anywhere near Northport ?

Hey Ahab... are you anywhere near Northport ?

I'm an hour and a half further south up the coast. But my aunt and uncle live in Belfast which is very close to Northport

Yes it is...
What if I told you I might be able to get you permission to hunt 7 acres on Penobscot bay...
House built in early 1720.
Famous Sea captains house ...
Cliff to beach where so much Sea glass is that it glistens on the right day.

I would say I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!!!!!

Doesn't matter, anywhere we can get a clear shot will work. :)

Easy bro lol. Don't be bitter because I was actually right about one thing in a year and a half

I'm certainly very intrigued. This midcoast Maine area has got some crazy history and there's not many houses that early that still exist. That is a very early one and it belonging to a sea captain would have seen a lot of great activity. What's your connection bud?

After reading the initial post I was expecting something different in all the responses ; entertaining as they were, your question remained basically unanswered!
I see you have a theme going with the 8s and might be a borderline anal-retentive, but I am not necessarily thinking its a bad thing because you really made me think and look a little inward and now I feel I have some of those traits although they are just a little different. I'm not tied to numbers, but I do do things that some may shake their heads at.
There's a whole list of things I do detecting that without fail I do that make me feel lucky I suppose, I can't say that these will help or hurt others chances of making a great find, but I feel I need all the help I can get some days lol.
I know I have some quirky things I do, I can laugh about them because they're just silly and meaningless, but then I look at my display cases and just keep doing them because they get fuller!
I'll list some of them, try not to laugh too hard

On detecting day I almost always get up at 7, just do, have to wear my lucky detecting cloths ( that's right) from my socks to my Garrett Ace hat which I've worn for over 10 years. Almost always wear my green jacket that has the name Jeff on the sleeve (and that's not my name, it came from a lost and found at the gym lol). I always fill my gas tank with fuel even if I am going five minutes up the road, you never know where the day will take you and it pays to be ready for it. When I get to a place and turn on my machine I wave my shovel over coil just to hear it sing, I guess I'm checking my phones too huh? I like to make a mental plan of where I'm going to hunt so that's where I start and stick to it as best I can. I almost always turn my shovel blade in facing me, not sure why but I do, and when hits come ill drag the blade on the ground to show where I've been walking, and that's why there's uneven wear on it. Everything goes in the pouch I've been using for about 15 years now, it's trashed and worn but I still use it (part of my wardrobe as mentioned before) At the end of the day my detector goes back in the car where it lives from day one to last swing; so it's at home there from April to December every year. I guess it goes where I go all the time, besides you never know where or when it's going to come in handy!
I know there's a whole raft of other things I do, but I'll save those for another time
For those who know me you can always expect this of me, and since my methods can maybe be reflected in my finds I'm going to keep at them with hopes of continued success

Thanks IH. I like the lucky clothes thing. I always wear the same undershirt. I think whether we consciously think about it or not when we have success at something we tend to be afraid to change them. I've been doing this since I was a high school athlete. I just feel like I'm preparing myself as best I can and kind of mentally locking myself in with all of these crazy little things I do. You know in reality I prob would still find the same stuff and everything would be the same without these moves....but I'm not willing to risk it. The day I found the tree coin I had pulled in beside the cop car with the number 8 on it. Just stopping for a battery and there it was. So I was thinking it could be a great day. Then I went out there and got lost and soaked first thing. Fell down a hill and was having an awful day. Then bang....tree coin....bang....cob! So now it's even worse. I'm a prisoner to a # lol. But I just embrace it cause it seems to work. So thanks for sharing a few of your "habits". I was hoping more would have some weird superstitions to share. Maybe I'm a bit more odd than I thought :-)

You forgot the main lucky one.... you pick me up... which assures you will likely find something good. :laughing7: (no guarantees in detecting) Funny how it used to be with me seeming to have the magic coil, but you hung in long enough to flip it. I think your reign has been a few years now so I think it's about time it turns back. :headbang:

I'm crazy in another sense... more about being organized and having everything I need with me. I try to keep it pretty normal, but believe me if I had a stack of cash with no good purpose IH and I would likely be hauling a trailer with some type of 4 wheeler and a drone strapped to the top of it. That would be besides a dozen detectors, shovels, sifters... like a little mobile warehouse of detecting gear. Luckily I'm in no position to even think about being that nuts, but I know the beast lies within.

That's why I hunt alone! I work damn hard to find these spots that I think may be great. If I found somebody else that was putting in the time and effort that I do I may well have a hunting partner. But that hasn't happened yet. And though I'm always psyched to see my Tnet buds find awesome stuff. I would not be so psyched if I did great research and brought somebody to said site and they found........MY MASS SILVER NOOOOOOOO!
I did bring one guy to one of my sites and he found a nice Mass cent and the one that hurt was the brass toy cannon. It was a real beauty. But he's a real nice guy and these were his first ever colonial finds. So it felt good
