You can't make a silk purse out of a sows' ear.

You got champagne taste and a beer pocketbook.

My neighbor next door, will come quicker when I hollar, than my brother, on the other side of the planet.

Veni, Vidi, Vici------ I Came, I saw, I Conquered
A quote by Julius Caesar after five triumphs , four within the same month. His intent was to note his speed in dispatching the war, not the outcome of the war! Frank

My Mom also used to say (as I was being punished for any various youthful infractions of behavior),

"If you're going to dance the jig, you must pay the fiddler."

Best,
Scott

This one from medical school "Nolite te *******es carborundorum", can also be said as "Illigitimati non carborundum". Meaning "Don't let the *******s grind you down."
While this is not really a saying, also from the Roman Empire, "Parting shot". Came from the early 2nd century during emperor Trajan's campaign against the Parthian empire, the Parthians had learned a new trick; when they would apparently flee on horseback, the Roman calvary would chase them. The Parthians had learned to turn in their saddles and accurately fire their bows. They killed approx. one out of every ten soldiers in the mounted legion that way. So today we get "Parting (Parthian) shot" and also the term "decimate".

Oh well, they censored me. I figured since I first heard it on broadcast television, it would be okay here. The deleted word stands for a masculine illigitimate child.

I appreciate and understand your contribution.

I'm also impressed that an ancient Latin language filter was employed to censor you!

Imagine that...:icon_scratch:

Attributed to Benjamin Franklin, distributed through his "Poor Richard's Almanack" (sic)

One of many Great maxims and philosophies from the times of our Founding Fathers. Many adaptable to current thought....

PS. To further explain the tenet from above, when this idea was conceived, the people in the new land were still under considerable British influence. The monetary unit that was at first adapted to the new colonies were that of England. Pennies, tuppence, shillings, pounds, crowns, etc....

In the same vein, Franklin also cautioned to, "Mind the pennies and the dollars will mind themselves."

Au24k,

I have been censored in English before, but I believe this is the first time my Latin has been.

It missed mine! lol but AU24K got it.

A saying from my past youthful experiences:

When the sh*t hits the fan, it's best to be in another room. :icon_thumright:

Best,
Scott

PS. Deny everything, take in all that you can and give up nothing!

My Mom also used to have non-sensical rhymes, possibly from her youth, that I still remember today.
One goes like this:

"Listen my children and you may hear,
The story of the midnight ride of Paul Revere.
He jumped into the car and stepped on the gas,
The door flew open and he fell on his, ah,
Well, don't get excited; don't be misled.
The door flew open and he fell on his head!"

Best Wishes,
Scott

My dad use to say."He who hits and runs away, will live to fight another day." Frank

Frankn,

When I was young, I didn't hit; I just ran.
I didn't want to hurt anyone through the unleashing of my fury.
(A discussion surely for later consideration....)

Yes, I was the target of all of the bullies and the "bullies to be," who were actively "vying for supremacy;"
a heirchy "under construction," always found throughout the educational system.

It all ended one day at school, as I was a Sophomore, and a Senior slammed my locker shut,
requiring me to go through the combination again to open my locker. Again!

I guess that I snapped, slammed him to the ground and found out later
that I had broken his nose once the pummeling was over.

It took two male Teachers to pull me off.

He went to the hospital, I went to the Principal's office.

Fortunately, there were enough witnesses of this event and also previous examples of provacation that I was eventually exonerated and, NOBODY has ever messed with me again. To this day....

The gist of this experience is that retribution comes to those who are patient. I guess. :icon_scratch:

I see the wisdom of your Dad's words.....

My Best,
Scott

I too caught it in school until I reached 12. at that point I started to deliver morning, evening and Sunday (300) papers. I was only challenged 3 times after that. One got a broken nose, one got a broken leg and one got a broken arm. I hate fighting, but if I can't walk away, I will try to finish him fast. Frank

As much as I learned from my Dad, it's a quote from my Mom that's directed a lot in my life;
"Make hay while the sun shines"
Meaning every opportunity you've got to get the work done, do it.
