every winter i do a little bit of sorting out unorganized old cigar boxes of mostly brokes and junk which i should have not even brought home
once in a while i find one or two things that end up making me happy for doing this
a few minutes ago i found this on a shelf and realized i had found it at least quite a while ago and kinda forgot about it

i thought you might want to see the great face of the 'Tatonka'...check it out and tell me what you think

a once in a lifetime find i think

Wow that is a cool one there. It doesn't appear to be a rim piece that might otherwise have decoration on both sides by you. I think it really is an effigy. Great find...wish it could have been whole for you.

Nice find Steve looks like a effigy handle to a pottery vessel. I agree it does look like the great Tatonka. I would love to see a possible effigy of Great Earth Mother. Or at least a Native American depiction of her.......................Chris

It was explained to me once at a powwow that turtles were used as a representation of Mother Earth. the round shell body being Mother Earth the four limbs... the seasons and the head the "creator"

That makes absolute sense. I'm going to check that out......

Steve, I think you've had many once in a lifetime finds, and I think that may be another. It looks like it's from a vessel as GTP said, and it sure looks like a buffalo. Sometimes finding things the second time around like that is actually more exciting then if you recognized it the day you picked it up. Very cool piece!

That's a really nice find!!

That's awesome. I have lines and cordage imprints and once in a while little holes but that's it. Great piece.

Ok, not to be a buzz kill, but do you really think that the creator intended for that to be a buffalo face? Would it not take the whole vessel to really understand what you have there? I know you find lots of effigy pieces up where you are, but I'm not sure on this one. Like S. Valentine has said "natives were great artisans". In my eye, this one falls a bit short. Like many of mine have fallen short in the eyes of others. Not in the least trying to start a quarrel, but I'm just not sure if what we see was intentional. Please, let's have a little more history on this one. Thanks for the view!!

Great buffalo piece thanks for the look.

Very nice rediscovery from the toss box! Maybe a child's plaything?

Nice find Steve or save. I havent ever seen another one like it before. Could be one of a kind. A true keeper for sure.
