Prospector Shot on his own land - trying to mow!

Yes, it is still in his leg... There was one whole projectile found by the Sheriff, and a partial one found on/in the mower by the uniformed 1st on scene officer... They thought at least one was likely a lead pellet instead of a 22. The doctor at the hospital said it appeared to be a .22 caliber from the CT scans on Steve's leg which show a flattened projectile at the bone. All three shots happened when Steve was shot. Thus, they think it was a high powered pellet gun. I think pellets and 22's are similar in size (let me know if I'm mistaken) I just don't see how a pellet gun could do that much damage, our BB gun could never do that... Ours could never dent in the hard metal of our old craftsman lawn mower frame, or puncture a heavy tire; ours might barely break skin, but I can't imagine it going all the way through the muscle, and hitting/flattening at the bone.

Our pellet/bb gun will make a racoon get out of the trash though... :laughing7:

Yeah right? Not to mention the husband said he heard 2 shots, then the 3rd hit him in the leg. I don't know too many pellet guns that can be heard over a running tractor, blade disengaged or not. I'll take back my last post giving the sheriff's dept. the benefit of the doubt. I believe they are just a bunch of incompetent hicks with a lack of proper training and a possible Barney Fife yellow streak going down their backs..

Not trying to defend what has been a sketchy job by investigators, but My husband has always maintained that he heard two pops and the third one hit him. I assumed the pops he heard were shots, but it could have been the sound of the bullets hitting the mower. He said at the first pop he thought a nut or a rock hit the mower, but Steve said what he heard were "pops" and didn't realize he was being shot at, at first he thought a hickory nut, or rock or something hit the mower, with a pop sound, then another shot hit the mower right in front of his knee, thats when he realized the sounds were shots, the next shot hit him in the leg... So, yes he heard three shots because they hit him and/or the mower, but maintains they were pops, which could be impact noise. But he never heard what he could call a rifle shot. I assumed the mower sound simply muffled the sound so thats why it sounded like pops. Not that it matters what weapon he shot him with, fact is that he did. If a pellet gun is powerful enough to do this much damage, then the person using it is attempting to kill, you don't shoot people unless you're defending yours or others lives! Shooting an old man on a mower, deserves to be handled appropriately by LE... The Sheriff's office needs to bring him to justice no matter what type of gun he used.

The our attorney, and Sheriff Crimshaw himself left our Oconee property a little while ago. We were able to voice our concerns about the goings on with LE so far, as well as show him the crime scene, etc. He brought in forensics too. Looks like it could have been a high powered Pellet gun instead of a 22 rifle. We still don't have the bullet out of Steve's leg though. Could a pellet gun actually puncture tires, or go through a calf muscle, and flatten at the bone? I don't care what type of gun he used; He needs to be behind bars; Just wondering, if it is a pellet gun, what kind of pellet gun could do so much damage?...

just an idea as to why the pellet gun story. i believe pellet guns are legal for convicted felons to possess whereas a firearm could lead to a new case for morris. since he uses his middle name as a first name, i figure he must hate morris. if i was there, i'd call him 'morris' at every opportunity ;)

Pellet or bullet, doesn't matter. With pellet guns, shooting at or into buildings, enclosures, cars or equipment is illegal under the South Carolina code and is a felony. A person convicted must be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned for not more than 10 years, or both.
I know a guy that got 2 years in prison for intentionally throwing a rock through his neighbors window down here. It's called a "deadly missile" around here.

here's a blow-up of the projectile.

photo 2a.webp

see how it's hollow. that looks like a pellet to me. i don't know what size. need to use a micrometer on the diameter to verify the caliber

Curiouser and curiouser. Y'all do know, should some sort of criminal or civil case be filed one way or the other, for whichever side, everything you post on here could be subpoenaed into court?

As I mentioned previously he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years at one time (despite having it stayed to time served - if I recall about a month from arrest to pleading guilty) that had to be a felony and he was convicted. So it makes sense he now has an .22 pellet air gun and they couldn't swoop him up for possession of firearm. Still did a shooting, attempted murder, reckless endangerment and all that stuff.

Now that the sheriff is responding lets hope he makes progress quickly.

Assuming the position of you on your tractor relative to the shooters position holds up, who else could have done it? And after all the threats?

just gonna huck this out there....I have a couple of very high powered pelet guns.one is a german 5 mm and the other is a us made 177 cal.tthese are for use on the ground squirrels that cause much damage to my property.Make no mistake,my"diana"german air rifle goes clean through both sides of my vynal trash cans from 100 ft.even 5 gal plastic paint buckets....both sides clean through.Only takes 1 action to load and fire...not multiple pumps.I can fire it every 8 seconds easily. It could kill a human.
I shot a quart can was lacquer thinner(these are thick metal)from 200 ft.and was easilly a clean shot through BOTH sides. No kidding.
Please do not discount the power of quality air rifles.some are amazing.this german one kicks harder than my 22 long rifle.just sayin...these rifles can kill.

Yep! Up to .50 caliber. 3,000 PSI. Huge Selection of Precision Hunting & Target Shooting Air/Pellet Guns Some of the power...and the prices are insane!

There have been multiple fatalities with modern air rifles. They can break the sound barrier rather easily and sound just like a small caliber rifle.

Not that it really matters what the perp shot your husband with. To bad your husband wasn't packing so this problem could have been taken care of immediately.

I just got off the phone with Steve and then Terri and although I could be wrong, I don't believe that the perp shot Steve with a .17 caliber pellet rifle. They showed the Sheriff where it happened and he conveyed that the perp likely shot from about 70 yards (210 feet) away. If that was the case, there are very few pellet rifles that could propel a pellet with enough force at that distance to penetrate a riding lawn mower tire or Steve's leg. If it was in fact and turns out to be a .17 caliber projectile, then it was likely shot from a .17 HMR Rifle. Since the bullet that the Sheriff and Forensics guy took out of the lawn mower tire was apparently partially in pieces, then the key is to retrieve the bullet from Steve's leg and take pictures of it right away before the LE's take possession of it and it becomes so-called evidence as it is likely the most intact bullet or pellet for evidence.

On another note, I hope the Oath Keepers come through for Terri, Steve and Tabitha as I may be delayed in getting there due to yet another breakdown! My' 2009 F-150 is having transmission problems that just showed up this morning. The Ford Dealership near here said that the normal fix for the problem (the Valve Body electrical connection inside the transmission is not talking to the Coupler on the outside of the transmission which sends the signal to the Powertrain Control Module) will cost me around $1,600 or a little more. However, a little known part used for repairs in a Recall for the same transmission on some earlier year Model F-150's can be used and it will only cost around $600 and hopefully will fix the problem. If worse comes to worse, I will travel to South Carolina in my' old 1999 Ford Ranger with 291,000+ miles on it and leave the F-150 here which my daughters can get by with even though it is operating in Limp Mode.

Floristweb, did you say the doc said let the bullet/pellet work its way out

not sure how old your husband is, but i think i would get another docs
opinion, was just talking to neighbor again, he said a doc told his cuz
who was accidentally shot with a pellet, to let it work its way out, he
shot himself in foot, well not good, became infected and had to have
surgery, he could have lost his foot. at the time the cuz was in his 30s

I hear ya buddy...but at 200 ft. my german air fifle goes through BOTH sides of a metal lacquer thinner container.both sides. It is loud and deadly. If the LE bafoons even try to discount the ability of these weapons(yes they are weapons)than it will come up in the legal actions that will surely follow.

Folks think bb gun...I know better...the good stuff aint cheap and rips.At 215 ft.I could do great bodily harm with my air rifle.....just sayin...I am HEAVILY armed as I wish all would be.However the law requires the use of this particular weapon for defence of my property.I did well with this monster air rifle.glad I invested in it but dang...its lethal at over 200 feet.

There's nothing new about the power of air rifles, had a Russian made model 40 yrs ago would go through 3/4" plywood no problem. So what they have out today should be better and more FPS than back then.
I guess when this is all over and the piece of lead works it's way out of the leg, your husband will need a detox for the lead that's been sitting in his body. Remember that after two weeks after the last bit of lead exposure it's no longer detectable through a serum test (blood work) as it has migrated into the cells and into the bones, The test for these levels is done through body hair samples and other methods to detect the level of exposure.

You can buy high velocity .22 pellet rifles 1200 plus FPS.You can also modify them to increase pressure input output. If doesnt take much know how if youre mechanically skilled and good with your hands. They could also be modified,if they cant do it right off the shelf, to fire .22 shorts, longs, long rifle bullets.Notice I said bullet not cartridge.Bigbore air rifles can use lead, jacketed lead bullets that you buy to reload cartridges with ive seen them from .357 caliber to .72 caliber.

The answer is = Get a hold of the bullet that hit him,or look for the others.
