Went back and hit the field I have been diggin the last few days. It was a slow night tonight. But I did manage this Buckle that I thought was a brooch til I got it home. This is probably the best buckle I have ever dug. All in all Im happy with tonights digs. Also posted it in the what is it forum, to try an find out exactly how old it is.

Heres a couple new pics of the buckle cleaned up a little better. This thing is a bear to clean. Been usuing a toothpic. That rust comes off hard.

You are correct about many items that we find having been thrown out. But people just didn't throw out silver. I too have found military buckles of all sorts that were discarded--even both pieces of two-piece military buckles (which means that the whole belt was tossed out) along with almost all of the uniform buttons (which means that the whole coat was thrown out).

But I strongly disagree with the notion that folks tossed out items made of silver. It would be like tossing out several two reales coins just for the heck of it! (And this was in a day and age when metal traded and circulated freely because of their value, whether or not they were neatly struck into circular discs issued by a government). Trade silver, "sharp shins" and other cut silver, cut coppers, and other trade items are all cases in point.

Well you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but it doesn't make it factual.

I have enough experience digging relics to stand confidently behind my original statement. I am not saying people chucking silver out was the norm, but it happened. It's not equivelant to tossing out reales. By your logic, my neck stock buckle would have never been thrown out because it would have been the equivelant of tossing out 4 or 5 farthings. Brass and copper items were thrown out ALL the time.

Metal wasn't traded and circulated in the colonies simply because of it's value (although sure it had some value)...it was traded and circulated in large part because in the early days colonies didn't have any, or had a shortage of currency. It wasn't being made locally with the exception of some fakes, so people used what they could. As for the trade items and trade silver, much of that took place here in the 1600's and 1700's when there was even less currency, and it was traded to the native americans. With the exception of native american sites, you don't find much "cut" trade silver. Keep in mind the natives had NO currency at all, and they took items in trade that had very little monetary value. Traders during the fur trade era were certainly not trading items with a high dollar value...quite the opposite actually.

Anyhow, don't want to highjack a thread here and take away from an excellent find.

I was wondering what you would find next in this field, and think I mentioned that in a post of one of the old coppers you found. Saying something like since they came from 10 feet apart.....

Anyway I'm still wondering the same think...what's next from this field ?

Awesome, totally, congrats.

Rick

Thank you Rick. I have a few sites some are a time wise thing that I have to do now. So I am back and fourth to this field. But you can bet I'll be back there trying to pick up some more goodies.
