Got out last weekend with my hunting buddy Jason to a couple typical Northeast cellar holes. We both found one coin and a bunch of buttons. He found a 1782 half Reale and I found this 1772 1 Reale. My oldest silver to date. I am curious about the inverted mintmark and Assayer initials. Anyone know about that?

Thanks
John

Great looking Spanish coin. I found one, in Petersburg, VA when stationed in the U.S.
Sorry, can't help you with the info you asked for. This is the right place to ask, though.
Plenty will get you that info. Got some good men/women on this site. Find many more......:)

Nice find...I love finding Spanish!

Nice "catch" as they say.

Both 1772, and 1773 have inverted marks like that.

I gotta get out of here and see if I can find something.

Me too and I can see it happening soon! :headbang:

As Rick mentioned above, during those two years these coins came with inverted mint and assayer marks. They were also minted in the normal fashion. The coins are .903 fine, about 3.4g and 23mm in diameter. In F, VF or EF the retail values were recently $10, $20 and $40, respectfully.
'Back in the day' (30 years ago), the printed value of the 'inverted' coin was LESS than the 'normal' coin in VG.
Don........

It's not inverted. All the other engraving on the coin is! you are holding it coin wrong :laughing9:

Nice find!
