The New Forum: Gripes, Issues and Other Mentionables... by diggummup

For sure Spartacus, I just hope some of your greatness rubs off on me.

Not to worry, it it does, you're a big guy so we'd need a 2x4 to knock it off :p

Yes the reason is to have enjoyment and there will be some tough times getting these issues straightened out but we need to refrain from namecalling if its meant to belittle another member... Joking is OK.

ADDED: And maybe it would help if we all try to lighten up a bit.

I agree, and to anyone late coming to this thread, Diggumup is a great asset to the site. His knowledge has been invaluable to me.

Couldn't agree more, and his posts are full of constructive suggestions. We have no problem with that. This place is a work in progress and the only way it's going to get better is if we all work together in a positive fashion to accomplish the goal of making this place as good as it can be.

That wasn't directed toward you or the site JD, but to other posts since removed.

I know, I just wanted everyone to know that I agreed with you and that we don't need to jump on anyone and that he has been a model member.

Just my 2 cents, but I would like to say I have found the new management to be very receptive to our ideas, problems and complaints. I think they have gone out of their way to try to solve our issues and help us under difficult circumstances, especially considering the negative comments and they continue to do so.....

I found this out before they ever asked me to be a mod..... Even behind the scenes I witness them trying to find ways to make the site better and easier for all.......

Sorry John if I am givning away inside secrets....LOL

Ahaha no worries. Like I've said before not a day goes by that we don't make an improvement to the site. Usually several and we aren't done yet. So to everyone that is still not happy with the way it is, just be patient... we'll get there.

The merging of threads is confusing to me and it was never done on the old TN. I understand part of it was moved but there wasnt any notice so nobody had any idea what happened. Now we have half of a thread that appears to be started by Shermanville and it doesnt make any sense with the first part missing. It seems to me if you remove the Original Post you have to move or delete the rest. .

There is no doubt in my mind that you are working VERY hard but its also hard (for me) to accept that this is now a completely different site and a very complicated one at that.. Its like joining a new site with some of the same members. I notice a ton of newbies and you should be congratulated for that.

A comment on the Green check. You state: "Now it is not necessary for the original poster to mark the thread as solved since that didn't always get done. Now, the community can mark the thread as Solved or leave it Unsolved" That seems a bit misleading. If everyone doesnt use it, its useless.

You are correct that it didnt always get done but I worked very hard with very little help over many years (over 20,000 posts)to tell newbies and remind members that forgot or didnt know. Now my name has been removed from the only place that I was given any recognition for my services at the old TN and its cool, thats life. Im not crying, but I think you should be encouraging members to place the green check instead of implying that its optional. I typed out a great reminder that I used over the years, with only 1 member that ever complained.

Dont take this the wrong way. I cannot tell you what to do in your house... just making a suggestion. Of course, you cannot twist someones arm to post the green check but it should not be "optional." I found all that was needed was a friendly reminder with instructions and never can I recall a time that the green check was "abused".

Congrats and wish you well with the new TN.

Makes sense for me. :icon_scratch:

SHERMANVILLE

I just wanted to add, that the What Is It forum has the reputation of being the BEST unkown artifact identification forum in North America, if not the world and I wouldnt want to see that changed. We have solved decades old mysteries from the Gloria Farley Coins to Piggnutts... from the Alaskan egg counter to squirrel bait.... even prestigious universities, the media and law enforcement have come here for help on occasion.

One thing I know for sure is this is the first place I will come to solve my finds in the future. With members like CannonBallGuy, CCHunter, Montana Jim, Creskol, Bramblefind, Breezie, BuckleBoy, timekiller, Charlie P., DCMatt, taz42o, daroofa, SODABOTTLEBOB, diggummup, fyrffytr1, Mackaydon, taz42o, kuger, Icutler, dg39 from Cajun Pawnstars, IronPatch, IronSpike, Crusader and Silver Searcher and those no longer here like Pleabah, SWR and PBK. Ffuries is the goto guy for military insignia. A collection of Googlers, MDers, museum curators, collectors, researchers and treasure hunters, even an archeaologist have teamed up to make it the goto forum for identification.

Im sure I missed many other names and for this I apologize my memory is not like it used to be. Just hoping TN stays on top depite all the changes.

Have a good un.... (wink)

ADDED: I missed many regular great members on this list Im sure, too many to list. Every member is important as many times a thread is solved by a newbie or occasional poster and its often a GROUP EFFORT..

Please let me apologize. My intentions with the new system was not to belittle what you've done or your efforts. In fact, just the opposite. I wanted to make a system that was easier for the members (and Administration) to use so that the policy and thread marking gets used MORE OFTEN. If the user and other long time members (such as yourself) have the ability to use it, I think it will get more use.

Now, if I'm wrong I can set it so only the member can edit it but I honestly think this system is better. I'd be happy to discuss with you and other members so we can come to a consensus.

In addition, I left the sticky up with the instructions, however I modified them so that they were current as to the new method: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/136840-how-mark-your-what-solved-photo-tutorial.html

OH NO!!! I misread your instructions. My bad. I thought you were saying its not necessarry to mark it solved (optional)

. OK I see you are trying to improve upon the existing system. Try it to see if it works. But I believe you will have complaints and headaches from the original posters. I think it has to be up to the original poster only if he/she is satisfied. But it was a lot of work to keep reminding everyone and I wont be doing it anymore..

You will certainly get more green checks but now I understand why you think it has the possibility to be abused.

We had a member (Piggy) that absolutely refused to post a green check. His interesting thread went on for years even after it was obviously solved but we didnt have an exact matching item. A thread gets very confusing if it goes over 2 pages . . This would seem to be a solution to this problem but I dont think it will work. It has to be up to the OP or maybe a moderator could post it if enough members agree its solved. Experiment if you wish. It will take possibly years of trial and error to get it perfect.

Maybe a vote could be placed on top of each thread?

No need to apologize John. You are just trying to make it better and I think you will. Those green checks sure do look purdy lol.

Thanks for bringing it back and listening to complaints and ideas.

You may be correct. I had a hard time reminding everyone to use the green check . It was constant work and I missed many. But everybody loves the green checks. All those solved artifacts make us look good..

Maybe you could select a few regular oldtime members that are very familiar with the What Is It forum. You cant just let anybody do it. There are only a small group that are capable. Most of the members on the list I posted above can do it.

Nice check. One of the best I've seen in a long time. :icon_scratch:

I originally misunderstood. I thought John was saying its not necessary to post the green check. My bad, I editted the post.

You are getting me interested John but I really dont have the time lol. The new TN could become quite interesting.

I have an idea, Just listen.

The OP can post the green check at any time by his or her self but it takes 5 (or maybe even 10) outside members to post it. This would prevent mistakes and abuse.

What you think? Can this be implemented? I think this would solve the problem of non-checked threads and also minimize mistakes and complaints from the OPs that it was checked too quickly.

Hmmm maybe like a TN staff position with a special designation. Not sure about the logistics of setting up those special permissions. Sounds like a great idea though. Let me run it by the entire staff and see what the consensus is.....

Joke! Seriously, Cereal Killer directed us to your post. I like the idea and you've recommended some fine folks.
