It got close.
Looks like today.

Man, I'll bet a lot of sweet old coins are getting melted down!

I had always saved up silver coin..mostly rolls of rosies and silver halves, but nothing
special. About 20 years back the economy was poor, I got sick and we were a couple
pmts. back on the house.

Figured, well, that's what I saved it for, so I sold it all and was able to catch up
the bills, and then SS put me on permanent disability, which is enough to keep
our heads above water. Selling that silver back then saved our ass, but seeing the
current prices makes me wish I'd found a way to hang on to it.

Know whatcha mean. I sold an 18kt gold ring for 200 once. The man said he couldn't believe he was paying me 200 for a scrap gold ring!

I found some lost pictures on a usb stick I came across in a drawer. That's from a picture on my tv screen taken with my phone so the colours are a bit messed up.
Todays price thats around $56,000 worth of gold in the 95% purity range.
But that's at premium price. The reality is some would get gold price, some bits ranging from gold price down to minus 20%. That lot now would probably get one about $48,000 to $50,000.
I used to buy gold in the shop I once worked in for my boss. Back then typical scrap nugget price for gold that would just get melted was minus 10%. These days typical scrap here is minus 20%. There's very little impurity in our nuggets in the golden triangle of Victoria. Typically its around the 95% mark or higher. That's nuggets and other alluvial gold from the same sources. From surface down to deep leads.
There is one place though where the silver content is high though I can't recall the %. I have a figure in my head of around 85% due to higher amounts of silver in it. Thats from St Arnaud goldfields.
A lot of our nuggets can have a slight orange sort of reddish tinge to them from the ironstone heavy grounds. These are typically from very shallow sources like hillsided where they haven't seen a lot of water action compared to the gold in the leads that had a more constant water flow over them. That tinge though is just the very surface of them not through the gold itself. A dip in most acids will see it gone and the usual lovely gold colour is seen. Its not unusual to find a lump of ironstone that has gold in it too. Iv found plenty of bits that it wasn't until I hit it breaking the ironstone away that you saw any gold. That's not uncommon. I have found bits that someone else had detected and dug up discarding it as just a hot rock leaving it next to the hole. Obviously a novice.

Same here with the gold. But it saw us through some tough times and I guess was used when it helped the most. Now would be for luxury, then it was for necessity which is way more important. So im glad we had it when it was needed.

I have never found any nugget over 5 grams, we just don't have them/I haven't found them/ around here. The old timers found some huge ones around here, I can't find where they left the rest ! Our claims are in Josephine county.

There's gotta be some somewhere there waiting to be found. By you hopefully.
Here we have areas where the gold was nugget or nothing, no fine gold. These areas were because of that difficult for the old timers to find. Some could try a likely looking gully, sink a dozen holes and find not even a speck. Some others hard up stumble upon that area, see some holes, shafts sunk and think lets have a go here and the first hole bottomed they get a 500 ounce nugget. So then its rushed and its like only one hole in 10, 20 has nuggets. They're usually poor diggings to detect the throw outs as the majority of stuff you go over will be worthless. Those areas can be great though on the surrounding grounds because it's real hit n miss scenario. Meaning others can have missed a lone nugget there detecting easily and maybe you'll hit it. I have some spots that I got nothing on several trips over the years and upon say the 12th time iv dropped in bingo, small nugget patch just 30 feet long and a few feet wide. Zero above it and zero below, zero in any other direction around it.
That's the nature of some of our areas. We have some real head scratcher areas here that seriously do your head in trying to figure them out. Some areas from the old timer days up to now are still shrouded in mystery as to how the nuggets got where they were. This lead to the idea of nugget growth in situ, and though to a point they have proven gold can grow on gold and other things its not how the nuggets really got where they are. An example is in the Ballarat deep leads petrified whole trees were found in the drifts with crystalline gold growing on some of them.
Some big nuggets too in the old days when cut open to examine the gold they found crystalline structures in some. But too many showed clear signs of abrasion from either the surrounding gravels passing over and around them or themselves having been moved with the gravels or drifts. The general idea, which I prescribe to, is they originated from a primary source being reefs of quartz or other reef type structures. Some of these other types they believe occured on the Talbot goldfields with the gold originating from veins within some of the granitic outcrops that are there.
One idea which makes huge sense is that the source put out huge nuggets as well as other smaller particles and pieces. But that huge water movements, massive flood events or event went through the area moving the fine gold and smaller nuggets well away to somewhere else leaving only the bigger heavier nuggets in or near their place of origin. Hence big nuggets sitting all on their lonesome. That is the simplest and most logical explanation in my mind.
Its quite amazing really when you read some of the memoirs and journals from the old timers accounts.
It certainly does deserve its term as being a precious metal.

Im gonna start using it in my conversations with strangers when I go shopping and see what reactions I get. I used to use a couple of made up ones of mine, iv been doing that for a number of years now for a laugh. Mostly im met with blank stares.
My favorite is still Poffing. To me it means marvelous, wonderful, that's the meaning I gave it. You can see that pause and look when I say it but nobody has ever asked me what it means 🫤
Maybe ill try next time out "what a durned poffing day this is" hopefully nobody takes a swing at me, im not as nimble now as I once was so getting out of the way of a big hit might not work out as planned. 😬

Hows this. I always have vivid dreams as soon as my eyes close and im asleep. Even as a little kid.
So last night I dream im a passenger in an suv and the guy driving keeps giving it to it. Guy in the back says "hey slow down". Im "I think he knows what he's doing" then in front is a rise/bump in the road, we hit it and go airborne, and it starts rolling sideways in the air. We crash into the scrub on the roadside. I come to and we all survived but were a beat up. I check myself and I say "Iv got a broken wrist" I squeeze it and feel it and say "yep, I can feel the broken bone". So we set off to get help, but my arms really hurting as I walk so I grab my wrist and hold it tight as I walk.
I wake up to this. The wrist that was broken and I grabbed in my dream squeezing it.
This must have been from me actually grabbing it and squeezing it during the dream.
Bizarre or what!

As a teen I had a dream I got in a fight and kneed a guy in the head. I woke up and had kneed a hole in the plaster of the bedroom wall.
I know, there's nothing funny about it. A few times over the years I have woken up and the misses had gone out to sleep in another room saying "you started to tell someone off so I thought I better go and sleep on the couch".
There's no answer for it that I know of.
