So I hope all went well with the Mom's moving and placement.

Thank you Peps! Just now got home from the U-haul truck return. My brother and I unloaded the whole thing and placed everything. Mom is happy as a clam!
If I never have to drive through California again it will be too soon!

Chevy nova street stock dirt track race car. Factory 4 link with 9 inch and brand new never run rear disk brake conversion. Comes with fuel cell, radiator, seat, and everything else you see. Don't know a lot more about it. Could be a decent car with some time. No engine or trans.

Blacks start the season.
Smoky colored early they blend so well I've though thier pattern would make great camouflage patterns to hide from humans.

The very first are raison sized. Often on a long decayed oak stump in moss where they won't be seen later in season. A magic temp involved maybe. That 50 degree I keep resisting the urge to run around with a cooking thermometer about.

I like poplar groves with thigh sized at least tree trunks for blacks. Soft underfoot from the loam of decades of leaf drops and rarely really ever dried out.
Where bark has slipped off downed trunks or limbs or entire tops is worth tracing. For me holding my head still and scouring for sponge of any color works best. Keeping my eyes away from any of my shadow. Other shadow doesn't help either but explains why I like to hunt cloudy days.

There were mounds on one spot since logged and dried out.. that might have been ancient pine stumps . There were my first picks of the season of any size.
In all cases a sponge type ground. Which given what the morels are the fruit of makes sense. And holds moisture while acting as insulation warmed from below by the earths temp..

Finding the first of the season (seeing it) is important. Just as first of each hunt is.

Yellows later in low spots or richest soils are huge in comparison. And wave at you from twenty yards away glowing like hunter orange ten mile cloth.
Then squeak when you cut them .

late season I watch the sides of our road where my plowing snow debris ends up. Sometimes one peaks out. Or two .

I woke up to about 1/2 inch of snow this morning! It's supposed to be Spring here! 0-o-h-h-h! It is a typical Spring here! I forgot... because we didn't have a typical Winter here either.
