That's why all the young trees in our yard have fences around them. I love having the deer in the yard, but they absolutely will eat and kill the trees if they aren't fenced. Been there, done that. Took me a few tries to learn.
My roll of fencing is at the hunting property.
Ha ha ha. Yeah I'll catch on eventually.

Here's a funny thing though -- my mother-in-law used to get so mad that the deer would eat the Hostas that she planted. It never killed the plant (they grew back), but it annoyed her greatly. She even tried planting deer-resistant plants near them thinking it would deter the deer (it didn't). But since she passed away, the deer haven't touched the Hostas. Weird.
Well that reinforces that they eat what an individual would have them avoid , more than what exists.
Deer allegedly don't care for the taste of black spruce.
A doe and fawns would lay among those I planted, in between their snacks.
25 black spruce evaporations later I was starting to think deer might eat black spruce.

A historical landmark is visiting Brookings Harbor this week. The Western Flyer is famous for a trip it made to the Sea of Cortez in 1940 with John Steinbeck on board to study sea life there. He later wrote the novel The Log from the Sea of Cortez which is considered an American classic. It took seven years and millions of dollars to bring the boat back to it's original beauty after sinking twice.

Believe it or not... The state of Oregon regulates the disposal of the clippings and stems. I learned that....didn't want to or give a shit but being there and having anything to do with the growing of the crops they said you WILL know the regulations.When I was growing I'd save up all the stems and fan leaves, and
then toss a huge pile of them on top of all the cedar duff and small
branches I burn a couple times a year..neighborhood loved it...
Here's a thought...if you ground up all those fan leaves and stems, and
then actively made compost from it all (with other organic additives, of course),
could you package it and sell it as compost?
Plus, those fan leaves and stems are likely to retain a small percentage of the
nutrients fed to the plant, meaning anything planted in it will be getting
"the good stuff" right from the compost.
"Valhalla Compost...your plants will think they're in heaven"....

Then again our neighbor a few years back was eating hard candy.
Got one caught in his throat, passed out.
Class A was doing 70 mph down into the ditch, then got a tad levitation when hitting a side road entrance.
His wife was sleeping and wasn't hurt, he spent a few weeks in the hospital.
Scary grey hairs driving those rigs.
No hose.
I did rebuild a pump.
Aquired a hand auger you turn to dig.
Have not chased down pipe and nipples to set it up for a try at augering a well.
Had the alcoholic nearby bring his back hoe in and dig a test sump last summer.
Deer drank out of it untill freeze up. Despite swamp near.
Recovery rate was slow so I didn't dig a pit next to it to let sediment settle out before pumping.
