The wow that almost wasn't... Eagle Belt plate

And to think I almost passed this signal up. It was showing up at 12/30 at 6 inches but it was considerably deeper so I covered the hole thinking it was trash. I walked away but the next time I passed it in my grid I listened to it again and thought it was worth a second try and out popped this nice belt plate. Other than that I found a 1929 Standing Liberty quarter. Does anyone have an idea on the vintage of this belt plate?

I believe I have found your plate in "Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874" 1840s militia sword belt plate

I do not think this plate is in "American Military Belt Plates by O'Donnell"

Click to enlarge photos and btw this is a rare plate!

Thats it! Thanks so much HutSiteDigger! As far as a six for Rarity does that mean pretty rare? I ask because I can not find a single picture online of this plate.

The book it is listed in was published in 1974 so that rarity would probably gone up to a 7 by now.. It is imo.. boarder-line of a banner find. Good job on that even in that condition still amazing!

imo.. A un-damaged one i could see going for about $600 or even more on E-Bay! I don't know what a damaged one would bring in. If you do want to sell it I'm sure E-Bay would be it. Did you happen to dig this in a Civil War area? It is possible this plate was used in the CW !! if it was found in a Civil War camp site then the value could be higher.

I wouldn't sell it unless it was worth much more than that... I put a lot of time and effort into discovering things like this and it would be painful to part with it .
I am in Dutchess county New York which is about halfway between NYC and Albany, which mustered troops to head south, other than that there was no civil war activity .
It was found at an old farm from the mid 1700s that I have recovered lots of other interesting items at.

Just for more info it could have been used in the Mexican-American War and then if the soldier was listed in the Civil War he could have brought the plate with him but where you found it around an old home site it is probably not involved in the CW but you never know.. Here is a list of regiments from New York that was in the Mexican American War:

1st Regiment of New York Volunteers, for service in California and during the war with Mexico;
2nd Regiment of New York Volunteers, for during the war with Mexico; November 1846
