See down for an updated pic after electrolysis...
Finding a trade axe has always been high on my list but have been unsuccessful thus far...until today. I have been researching a site and finally tracked down the owner and got permission. The site dates back to the late 1600s and was abandoned in the early 1800s. The area is huge and is now a hay field. It is on a tidal river on a high lazy slope. My first inclination was the site would be near the water along the slope. When mybuddy and I were walking in we hit aplowed field right next to the road and I looked down and found a piece of pottery...good sign. We didn't pay any real attention to this spot because it appeared to be in the flood plain. We spent the next hour, in pouring rain looking for the site but found nothing. On the way out we hit the iron patch right where we found the pottery on the way in. It was still pouring and the conditions were less than ideal. The land had just been turned so it was tought sledding all the way. We were soaked to the bone but decided to spend a bit on the iron patch to see if we could confirm the site. My first target was the trade axe! Site confirmed.
It started raining even harder so we decided to call it a soggy day and return at a later date...now that I know where the site is it will be much more enjoyable on the next hunt.
The trade axe is in rough condition, the back is split open and flared but I am thrilled nonetheless...it is in my newly set up electrolysis set up as we speak. I'm hoping for a touch mark but not holding my breath. Thanks for looking.
