See down for an updated pic after electrolysis...

Finding a trade axe has always been high on my list but have been unsuccessful thus far...until today. I have been researching a site and finally tracked down the owner and got permission. The site dates back to the late 1600s and was abandoned in the early 1800s. The area is huge and is now a hay field. It is on a tidal river on a high lazy slope. My first inclination was the site would be near the water along the slope. When mybuddy and I were walking in we hit aplowed field right next to the road and I looked down and found a piece of pottery...good sign. We didn't pay any real attention to this spot because it appeared to be in the flood plain. We spent the next hour, in pouring rain looking for the site but found nothing. On the way out we hit the iron patch right where we found the pottery on the way in. It was still pouring and the conditions were less than ideal. The land had just been turned so it was tought sledding all the way. We were soaked to the bone but decided to spend a bit on the iron patch to see if we could confirm the site. My first target was the trade axe! Site confirmed.

It started raining even harder so we decided to call it a soggy day and return at a later date...now that I know where the site is it will be much more enjoyable on the next hunt.

The trade axe is in rough condition, the back is split open and flared but I am thrilled nonetheless...it is in my newly set up electrolysis set up as we speak. I'm hoping for a touch mark but not holding my breath. Thanks for looking.

Re: Trade Axe

Romeo, that is one heck of a great recovery there. :icon_sunny: You don't see too many trade axes being posted, so this one definitely deserves more recognition than it's getting. Was this found at a fur trade site?

That site is going to yield many more trade-related artifacts!

Re: Trade Axe

Great find, axe heads are pretty rare. Keep that beauty in a good place. Plus keep digging in that area

Re: Trade Axe

Trade axe? Looks like a hunk of iron to me. :D ;D JK. Very cool. A lot of times you gotta dig some iron to see what's at the site.

Look forward to some nice Northern finds from you.

Re: Trade Axe

Here's an updated pic after several hours of electrolysis...no touch marks but I am starting to like the looks of it a little more. I'll try zapping it for a while longer and then call it done...a little sealer and then to the shelf.

The trade axe looks mighty fine to me, something I would enjoy to add to my collection.

Re: Trade Axe

That, sir, is a valuable find that VERY FEW detectorists will ever make. Congratulations!

Sometimes it seems like that house site is in the last place you look. It takes a lot of practice to be able to "take in" every little detail of the surroundings for clues. Some of the sites we're finding are in odd places as well--in valleys and more concealed. I don't mind this, because it means that no one else will have found them first.

Regards,

Re: Trade Axe

Thanks all...I think that this is the type of find that can be unappreciated just due to lack of knowledge...a year ago I probably would have thrown it into the bushes not knowing what it was...then I started hitting the Colonial artifact books and it has been near the top of my wish list for a while...now to find an axe with the touch marks...new Goal!

Anytime! I owe you more than I could repay at this point...the least I could do is a virgin site...

Don't owe me anything, you did the walking and swinging.

Still pretty meager hunts, I plan to kill it in the Fall with some new ideas.

Re: Trade Axe

Hey romeo ...NICE trade axe find !!

I've always hunted for these things and they are hard to come by , but persistance and digging the bigger iron targets , 'specially around colonial home sites and out in the upstate , Ny woods .... We've found a few :hello2: and thought I'd show them

First one is a 1600's french trade axe and its VERY BIG..has a 8 inch blade.

Second one is much smaller and is from a 1770's long gone home site.

Third one is a belt axe found at a early blockhouse site... pictured along with other desireable iron relics :headbang:

Congrats on a SWEET axe find !! :occasion14:

I only hunt early house sites and have found several trade axes. My best being one just like Derek posted. (first picture)

Have you cleaned your axe yet? I'm curious to see if there are any touch marks...
