Re: My worst find.. A family tradgedy. Please read. I hope this never happens to you
Ron - Recalling on my experience with a home fire. When the insurance adjuster first arrived he was able to write a check on the spot up to a certain amount so that we could take care of ourselves, ask if it isn't offered. When it came to making claims on personal possessions he suggested that we each sit down and mentally go through each room and write down every item, down to the last spice in the kitchen. Values would be placed on these items after compiling the list. This was not as large of a task for us as the area of total loss was confined to a one story addition off the back of the house, not a total structure loss. Obviously for sentimental reasons you'll want to try and find any photo albums but these will also help with the claim. Also consider what photos you or other family members may have in possession from family get togethers there. These photos, if available, will help in the claim and will help with memory during this trying time. We were also told not to dispose of any remains of items that were of a higher value until the adjuster approved. Especially keep this in mind if antiques are involved. It sounds as if things are being hurried along (not by you or your family) and you'll want to make sure decisions are not made in haste.
