Treasure Clue, can you help?

If you worked through Masquerade, you know that hands are important. Look at all hands in the book, where they point, what they "spell", and how many fingers each has.

What is the oldest and tallest lighthouse in America? Isn't it on a lake (inland lighthouse)?

Denete and everyone,

Do you see p. 57 as a dirt road close up, or an interstate with many lanes from a distance? ?
It may have already been discussed, but I just noticed an "A" in bubble letters near the left end of that tree (road). ?

denete,

i think the tallest lighthouse is Cape Hatteras in NC. Not sure about the oldest or the angle you're taking. Good luck!

I asked the lighthouse question because of the 'oldest and tallest' line. Before buying the book, I saw that illustration on Amazon.com as part of the book preview. The red roof and white houses are typical of some New England lighthouse keeper's houses. It made me wonder about the potential for that being a clue (almost all lighthouses are on public land).

julie1000,

I see the "A" but I also can see a gothic "h" where the "a" is the curved part of the h. They are both in the face of the tree. Can you see the "A" on page 45 where the fairy is pointing just below the neck of the dragon?

I think the "oldest and tallest" could be referring to the oldest and tallest tree in the USA.
Possibly the 'General Sherman' redwood in the Sequoia National Forest in CA?

On page 37, has anyone looked at it thru those 3D type glasses? I don't have any so I used colored Saran wrap. I think I see some writing next to the bee (upper right corner).

Does anyone else see anything or am I just getting blurry eyed?

That's a toughie. All i can make out is a possible 'A' and 'R' next to YE, and maybe the word 'SEE' under 'of fairies'...
I scanned it and tried all sorts og photoshop filters to no avail.

Gaines,
I totally agree with you. I also post on tweleve.org (as renart there). I also feel the text will give exact directions. Have you looked into the book's knotholes with a loupe. We've all assumed that MS meant real knotholes from what's posted. However, I can see numbers , letters, and a mans face and an 80 or a butterfly in various knoeholes under magnification. I also (don't laugh) traced the eye holes on page 46 and tried to place them over text to see if words emerged. Didn't work. Same with the leaves on that page. I'm also still trying to figure out how we would use a grid of numbers unless it was? zipcodes, to guide us to a cipher. Any ideas on your end??

I haven't scoured the different forums, but has anyone noticed the following items.

The facing of the moons on p.21 and p.31.
The facing of the moons on p.58 and p.68.

The dandilions in the book seem to approximate moon phases (some are different).

The creatures on p.38-39 only show one hand each.

The background on p.20-21 contains reversed script behind the printed text (don't get this page wet...trust me).

The Pickensrooter in the ornamented "F" on p.20 is reversed (the spider-like spot on his shirt should be on the other side when compared to p.41).

The multi-veined leaves are growing from the letters 'e', 'r', 'i', and 'e' on p.33.

The acorns on p.33 are not a part of the original artwork. ?More importantly, the 7 "spots" in the top right are either the firefly or the bee. ?They were apparently not part of the original artwork either (as you can see the art through the spots).

Some of these may have been discussed previously, but I thought I'd throw them on the table anyhow.

Denete,

Thanks that was a great list of new ideas.
I wondered if you could please elaborate on the reverse script on pp. 20/21. I don't see anything.
Also, I bet you already know this, but it is probably significant that all but one of the creatures is revealing just one hand on pp. 38/39.

Jewels,

No, I can't see the a letter on 45 under the dragon's neck. Certainly doesn't mean it's not there!

I"m wondering if anyone noticed that on p. 55 the Pikensrooter is not only on the "T" letter box, but also seems to be in the border - with the mas of scary folk - He is on the left, about 1 3/4 inches from the spine, and 2 3/4 inches from the bottom. His hand looks like a cut off limb. Also, the dark-haired man to the left of him and a bit down must have six fingers, as he is showing five and none of them is the thumb.

p.38-39: only one hand per character "on the book"...perhaps it is not a "second-hand book"

:)

Gaines... thank you so much, now I see the ant! Yay!

Also, I didn't mean to cause everyone so much worry with a possible difference between the first and second prints. I'm sure the oddities I've noticed are just simply due to the way they bound the book. Most copies would come out the same way as long as the printer, binder and cutter settings remain the same (Graphic Arts and Print Shop was fun, I actually remember stuff from that class), I was just curious as to possible flaws in the second print that might hinder some of us who were not lucky enough to find the book when it first came out. Word of advise: If you can, hold on to that first print, it'll eventually become very valuable in itself. Depending on how many people trash their copies to discover the treasures hidden, the first prints that survive will become rarer and be sought after simply for the story and the historical value it will earn.

stephencoffman ... wow, we think alike! I have a few pairs of 3-D glasses because of buying the Shrek 3-D movie (the spiders freaked me out!) I looked until I couldn't see straight, I saw many letters, or shapes that looked like letters, but they weren't clear and letters like 'R' 'A' 'B' or 'C' 'G' 'D' 'O' were not easily distinguisable... so if it says anything I couldn't tell you. Sorry. I was also thinking like with the fruit roll-ups with the red cellophane that drowns out all the red color to reveal the secret message on the paper, but I think the differences between the reds are throwing it off. I heard if you use the "magic-eye" technique--- let your eyes go out of focus and stare at it until you see something works kind of... but I guess I'm not doing it right. Anyway, I wonder if there is another technique along those lines...

On page 101, does anyone else see "2's" in the tree's mouth?

Also something that looks like a goulish face on the right side of the inside of its mouth?

- David

On page 55, lower left , just above serpent coils...does that guy have an "80" on his forehead?

I haven't seen anything that looks like it has polarizing covering an image, but I definitely would suggest using several colored "gels" for viewing images. ?In addition to losing certain colors, it can help to kill perspective.

I've been looking at some things with my glasses off (awful astigmatism) and it has made it much easier to "see the forest for the trees".

That's how I noticed the dandelions looked like the moon.
