Treasure Clue, can you help?

Speaking of Snail: I don't think I've seen this posted anywhere, but if it has been, accept my apologies. On page 93, doesn't that look like her/him to the right of the bright light?

Also, there has got to be some significance to the fact that snail picture is on page 1, 3, 5 (twice), 7, 9, 11, 13, 15. (An even code with one piece nary would be an ODD code, right?)

AND what about that neck scarf with the polka dots?!

AND, there is a mathematical term called the "golden ratio."

Snail shells are an example of the golden ratio appearing in nature. The link between snail shells and the golden ratio is the spiral found on their shells. This link is shown by drawing squares with sizes related to the Fibonacci numbers. Each time you add a square, whose size relates to the next Fibonacci number. This will create what is known as the Golden Rectangle, more can be found out about the Golden Rectangle by visiting MathWorld. This process is illustrated below.

You start of by drawing to squares of size 1 side by side

Then a square of size 2 added.

Then a square of size 3 is added

Then a square of size 5 added

Then a square of size 8 is added

Then a square of size 13 is added and so on...

You then proceed by drawing a spiral, the spiral is drawn by drawing a quarter of a circle in each square. (unfortunately the picture opposite is not truly accurate but it gives the general idea)

The golden ratio is linked to this spiral as the distance from the centre of the spiral to where the spiral touches a corner of one of the squares increases in multiples of 1.618. This spiral is not just found on snail shells but is also found on Nautilus sea shells and also on ammonites.

Relddir , first off welcome . i also agree with hoppperr i've not seen this anywhere either and will now have something other than tracing to do on my lunch hour at work .i'll let you know tonight .

Hoppperr wow !! i haven't a clue what that means , but will take your advice and look it up . i'll talk to you later tonight after work . carol

SALKNS , this is about your post yesterday talking about the song in the poem . it reminded me that 2 other times in the book a song is mentioned , sorry don't have the book handy , i believe it was in the nomenclature book and also when ana is cleaning up the flour spill maybe one other time . will check it out today at work also . maybe this is important . let me know what you think . have a great day everyone will chat tonight . carol

By the way, I am no math whiz. What I put in my last post was quoted from the website, but the pictures didn't come up. They're not my words and I don't understand it, but I thought some of you mathematicians might.

Peggy

hopperrr, I am reading a book about the golden ratio. It is also know as the number phi. It is active in such places as the stock market and even some of Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings. It also apparent in thousands of places in nature. My theory is that its appearance in nature is do to the evolutionary theory of common descent which states that all animals and species were once derived from one organism millions of years ago and slowly evolved. One example is that we share a common gene with yeast cells that produce myosin, a protein used to build muscles, but yeast cells contain no muscles.

Ok, I have been stuck on this one for along time so I am obliged to share it. Ok here it goes. Take the moon like song.
Moon like, Moon like, Dreamer one on ending, I cause your puzzling. Coincidentally, there is 52 letters total. An even code with one piece nary will spell out the sanctuary. Sanctuary=(maybe) state So with an even code that divides the letters of the song in half=26 state postal abbreviations=2 letters, 26 divided by 2=13, 13 states. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!

---Nolan

Nole,

I tried playing with that a bit just now. The problem I see is that there are two z's and Arizona is the only state abbreviation with a Z. Good idea, though. Maybe the phrase itself could be a code with actual different letters???? Thanks for the explanation of the golden circle. You are very smart!

Peggy

Hmmmm, interesting you should bring up the golden ratio. It seems that all of the 5x5 boxes in the book are indeed golden rectangles, but I haven't measured them yet. The golden ratio is also relevant in music. MS is a musician as well.

hello all...
I have been staring at the dark silhouette in the upper left hand corner of page 44 for weeks wondering what the significance might be and I believe I have found something . That shape matches the upper left hand corner of the letter B in the drop cap on page 25. The pages must be linked for some reason... Also page 44 is the only place (correct me if i'm wrong) that you can find a clover the same as the one in the table of contents. Any insights or confirmations of this would be appreciated.

Trapape,

PLEASE go back and read my original posting. That was NOT my statement; it was the authors in an interview he did on 12Gems, which I will repost below.

--------------------
you can post my answers.

mike

1. How can we get him to tour our 'neck o' the woods'? (Alabama)

send us an email through atreasurestrove.com and it will be forwarded to my publicist.
generally, there has to be some big venue associated with me going
somewhere, like a museum.
we then schedule school readings, book store readings, media and the museum over several days.
i do not chage a fee to read at the schools. and i will read from 3rd grade up.

2. I noticed somewhere that this is his "first" treasure hunt. Does he
have more planned?

im working on a second Zac, Ana and Pook story and hope it is ready in about 18 months. there is demand to have a world wide treasure hunt and this book may include it. it will depend on 1. if this hunt is still going and people are still having fun and 2. how people feel about the end of the first treasure hunt. were they happy with the way it ended. was it too easy? too hard?

3. I noticed that in the illustrations there are Dragons but, through out
the whole book it doesn't mention anything about dragons!

no the book doesnt mention dragons.

What do the dragons mean? Are they clues? Are they just a thing to throw
you off? or Are they just something you drew just to add+
something to the illustrations?

sorry, but these are the type of questions i cant answer.

4. Will the 2nd book involve a treasure hunt also?

as i said before, we will have to see.

5. One more, does he read our post for entertainment, or to see how close we are coming????

ive given up trying to read the posts for the most part. there are now just too many messages for me to wade through.

6. After so many years of thought, planning, and meticulous work, how does MS feel now that the book is published and the hunt is on? What I mean is, does he feel a sense of completion and is he ready to start a new project, or will it only feel 'complete' if and when someone finally
finds a token? Is sitting on the key to the solution and watching us
plod through the puzzles a bit like being 13 month's pregnant (when
will someone hurry up and find one!)?

im very happy that people are having fun with the hunt. but, its more rewarding for me to see how people like the story and families are reading it together.

7. The sub-poem that's been circulating the net. The poster gave no
verification. Is it another hoax? Or is there really a sub-poem?

again, i cant deny anything since that itself releases additional
information.

8. From the date you published the book-in a much smaller printing, how long did you think it would take before the first person redeemed a token. Now that there are many more books than the original printing, are you
surprised one has not been redeemed yet?

i had and have no expectations on how fast something will be found. but i hope they are found and i personally would like it more if lots of different people found them rather than just one person showing up with all of them.

9. Are you planning on visiting Michigan for a book signing and display of the jewels?

there have been several requests for Michigan but i dont think anything is scheduled.

10. What's your favorite food?

favorites are chinese & indian.

Oh yeah, and will u touring around LA at all?

we had tentatively scheduled the LA natural history museum but something fell through. feel free to call them and tell them about the jewels and see if you can get it rescheduled.

11. Would you please elaborate on, "The simple clues don't need any special knowledge to find or decipher"? Many are claiming things like Morse code could be considered special knowledge!?

i dont consider a one time look up as 'special' knowledge anymore than
looking into a dictionary for the spelling of a word.
the intent of the statement was to say you dont need any unusual knowledge.

12. Are all the editions the exact same size?

i believe all of the editions are the same size.

13. Is everything inside the covers, and the covers, considered parts that
may include clues., e.g., Official Rules and Appendix

i believe that i said 'the clues are within the pages of the story'.

14. "Do you read the forums, and if so, do you find them entertaining?"

yes, i read the forums but they are so big now i cant really stay current.

15. Without giving away any hints, do you believe anyone has gotten close to any of the clues, other than 'The Poem' ?

again, i cant really say if i think anyone is close since it could give them additional information.

16. How important are the 5x5 boxes as clues, and do we have the right
idea on their appearance (square, five rows and five columns.)
Is the constant misspelling of Twelve important? (misspelled in possibly
two lines of the poem, and in the Table of Contents)

the errata page on atreasurestrove.com contains the errors in the book.

17. Are all of the puzzles in the companion book used in ATT?
Are there any other puzzles in ATT that are not in the companion book?

for both of these questions, i believe that i said the puzzle book relate in some way. i also said that the puzzle book was to get you thinking. so, thinking is related.

18. I am a teacher and have been telling my students about the book and hunt anything to get them reading and away from TV/video games. One student is visually impaired and wants to know if there are enough clues in the text that he would have a chance. Having trouble seeing puts him at a disadvantage scouring the pictures for clues.

again, this is the type of question that im sorry but i cant answer specifically. its a printed book and it has clues it.

19. I would like to know if things like leaf litter, or several inches
of snow could be a hinderance in the actual (onsite) locating of the coin,
or if that should not be a problem.

cant say.

20. How often is the integrity of the coin location checked?

all i said is if i discover one missing for more than 30 days, i may void it.

21. What does "accessible to everyone" mean;

i believe the book says easily accessible.

22. My 12 yr old son is hooked on this book and the hunt. He is a very good artist and writer and would like to do a similar book when he is older.
What kind of advice would you give him?

keep thinking about it. he should follow his dreams.
i wish him the best of luck.

23. What type of mediums does Mike like to work with, and where did he get his training in illustrating?

ink and watercolor. the darklings are pencil and the
cover is an electronic montage.
i took art at Tulane university but i have a BS in mathematics.

24. How do you pronounce your name?

i presume you mean 'Stadther'? i say every letter. Stad ther (staadthur)

25. I would like to know what part of the Mr. Stadther enjoyed writing the most...

i liked it all and wrote it in about 8-10 weeks and tweeked slightly over the next five years. i came out quickly and didnt nead much fussing over. the part about Pook getting crystalized is still touching for me when i read it to kids.

26. Are there any real stories behind the book's characters and story that Mr. Stadther would like to share?

well, one comes to mind...

i had drafted an outline of the story and i liked the name Pook for Pook.
simply because it shot out of your mouth quickly and sounded a little funny.
later, i had a local audition for some young kids and wanted to select a
few as fairy models. i told them the story and afterward one little girl
raised her hand and asked me if i knew that Pook was Russian for fart. i
said i didnt, but it gave me the idea of using that as the basis for how
Pook got his name.

Brain , the black spot is the dragonfly the mate to the one on page 25. hopes this helps . the clover , well i don't really know the meaning behind it or anything for that matter. would like to ask if you look at pg. 33. now look between firefly and hummingbirds wings . there is a green something . it doesn't belong there . what do you or anybody make of it . just found it on lunch today and am dying to trace it unless someone can tell me it's purpose . carol

Luci- in reference to the boxes, please see my post 1594 on page 32.

Red- welcome to the show, GREAT input...

Nole- i started to type something and stopped, good idea...

Trap- Where ya been??? Didn't you have a place you were going to check out??? How did it go???

Sorry to post again, but i just felt it was time to interject some humor... Carol, God love ya... please call 1-800-Trace-off... jk
Great work- keep it up...

cmschut, after looking at the spot you mentioned on 33 i think it is the wing of the firefly while the black wing like things are the protective coverings that open for flight. i google searched firefly and thats what i concluded

Blackbeard , thank you . now if someone doesn't tell me what that is on pg 33 i'll be tracing again tonight . any ideas . it ain't no wing . it ain't no tree . it ain't no sky .

Hoppperr , i just looked at pg 93 and i see the snail . what do you think it means wiith the light shining on it ? ?have you seen any others ?

Brain , thanks . it just doesn't seem to fit , but i'll take your word . i appreciate the help . carol

Relddir , i was also looking at the numbers on the creatures you mentioned yesterday and can see most all , but am having trouble with ladybug and dragonfly . just wanted to let you know . great work and welcome .

CMSCHUT:

I forgot to mention that to make the poem work, I added in the preface words "here is your clue and its date:", since "Hint" was also needed to figure out the first clue, along with 'Tackle repositorys".

Add in the letters within "Here is your clue and its date" and see if you can come up with the rest of the poem now??

Gemini

Gemini , thanks . had i been thinking better i should've figured it out . I'll get to work on it and let you know . carol

Hi everyone,
Carol, I'm not 100% on the ginko tree especially after the post of how they are every where. Concerning your thought of the green item one the firefly. Look at the back of the front cover (very top) and the black silhouettes when the critters are flying in formation. MS has added a third wing, probably for depth of field. When I first looked, I thought it was a drawing typo. More than likely an inexperienced artist.
I started looking at page 66. The scrolly, calligraphy style of drawing has always looked like letters. Look at the lower left, Is that the word "know"? and in the middle on the right "guess"? There are at least three other areas that appear to have writing. Unfortunately, it seems that the puzzles in the pictures help in the poem, but have little actual value in precise location for the ever elusive tokens!Party on, Kregger

This is what i got from page 20-21 using only the side diamonds. Y=yellow U=blue M=maroon A=black G=Green /m/=marron inside spiders
yumuyyaauuuyauuamyayuygmyayaygmyyymagmgagayuyygaagmagaggyggggggayymauguyy/m/uyyayuuyyayyuyaguamuyayymgamuygauyumygayagyyamyuyyayaamaauaugumuaymym/m/
There seems to be a strange pattern but it might as well decode as saying you idiot you were stupid enough to decode a dumb little celtic knot design you have no life loser LOL
