Ever dug a nice find only to lose it before you reached your car with it?
Ever get permission to hunt a great looking old 1800's site and then have the owner have a change of heart because of a spouse or other relative?
Ever dig anything valuable but you didn't KNOW it was valuable and simply TOSS IT!!
Post your treasure hunting heartaches here! Here's mine:
A year has passed BB and I thought it was time to share a heartbreaker. I've sheepishly told the story many a times to friends and family and I still find it hard to believe as i tell it here but...here goes.
My very first attempt at metal detecting came in January last year after sitting at work, looking at an old history book of my area and thinking to myself that i might enjoy digging some old coins and relics.
I got home on a mild day (45degrees),dusted off the kids Walmart special metal detector(Bounty Hunter,Pioneer 101) that on a good day will pick up a quarter at a whopping 3 inches deep
and off into the yard i went.

My very first dig was a clad quarter(didn't know what clad meant at the time) and I thought it was pretty cool to be digging coins out of my yard. Along with the clad I dug this heavy round thing that I figured was a mangled old belt buckle of some kind and didn't figure it to be that old since our house was built in 1918. (Didn't know at that time that there was a house on this very foundation in the 1800's and it was tore down for this one to be built)
I took a picture of my first digs along with the "heavy round thing" dated 1/10/08. The next day i found some battered old hot wheels cars and some badly corroded cap pistols and labled the picture "Harleys,Guns and Money" A play on that song with the line about "Send lawyers guns and money" ...

ANYWAYS,in to a jar the clad coins went and in to a big plastic bowl the junk went. The weather turned brutal, the ground froze solid and the stuff was forgotten about until a few weeks later when we were having company for the weekend...
I tore in to my office doing a major cleaning and dusting, picked up that bowl of "junk" and into the trash container it went.
I sold a bunch of stuff on ebay and by the end of March had saved up enough for a DFX.
I was checking out today's finds one day in mid-April and noticed something on the banner. It was Buckleboy's three buckle day, the thumbnail photos were scrolling and what did i see?!

Oh no,it looked TOO familiar!! Can't be I told myself. I put a picture of BB's "round thing" in to my documents, cropped out the same size picture of my "round thing" and put them side by side..I called my teenage daughter in to take a look and her words were the final blow "oh Daddy" in a sympathetic tone.
I sent a picture to Buckleboy in an email pleading for him to tell me that I hadn't thrown away a genuine Civil War Era relic. ( I'm a longtime Civil War buff BTW with a tattoo of a Canon and Rebel flag on my shoulder) ...His very heartfelt, sympathetic answer started with "there's no way to tell you this that isn't going to sting"
So there you have it. I've developed a sense of humor over the blunder and I have had an awesome first year with some really neat finds but I'm afraid this one will always sting a little. If you look at my annual finds post you'll see that I haven't thrown away ANYTHING since
Thanks for hanging in for such a long post and feel free to share any treasure hunting heartaches here!!
