Watchu got...You ain't gonna believe this!

Well my good ole buddy Buckle Boy dropped by for a few days of Hill Billy Hunting, and we did it in style. We hopped in the ole Yota looking for a place to hunt. I knew of two homesites I wanted to hunt, so we went and spoke with the land owner and he said go ahead. He even drove us out in the field to show us where they used to sit. We started hunting the first site and BBoy dug a sweet solid silver spoon handle. He said to me ...if you find the bowl, it's mine. A short while later, I threw him his bowl, he now had a complete spoon. A bit later I dug a two piece decorative star button. We hunted for another hour or so digging brass bits and such. Then, bammo I dug an 1892 IH, in great shape! Things started to slow downand we started getting hungry and decided to head to my house for some lunch. After we ate the zaaaaaa, it was time to get back at it. We went to site number 2. Right out of the gate we dug a flat button apiece, then another. We looked at each other and thought this is to easy...like pulling fish from a barrel. we carried on and things slowed down when I asked... hey are you finding anything good? BBoy crouched to the ground, ignoring me like he doesn't hear me, I'm like ok carry on. Two swings later I'm digging my 4th 8 reale of my 4 year detecting career. The first three were counterfeits, and this one turns out to be a counterfeit too.

Dat dang Buckle Boy brings luck where ever he goes!!! Congrats on dem caught "fish" and tell BB to get dis luck (and him) back down cheer!!! Dares stuff in "dat dare feeld"!! Is he teaching you any Cajun French dialect?? :headbang:

believe me they make a good team, no Luck needed for Hb, he is like a hound hunting with that detector.

Bill

It ain't luck. It's skill. Site selection, not wasting time on the crappe from the 1910's and 20s, and getting the best that the area has to offer. Now that Shane has 1700s silver in his pocket and a mess of CW relics, it's Game On down south! ;D I'm takin the gloves off.

Preach Brutha! No truer words ever spoken!!!

Re: Watchu got...You ain't gonna believe this!

Awesome find :headbang:

Re: Watchu got...You ain't gonna believe this!

That is unreal. That is a HUGE piece of Silver. Congrats to you for finding that jewel! :notworthy:

Re: Watchu got...You ain't gonna believe this!

Hey Hill billy,

I think Iron Patch is on to something.

I didn't want to be a party poop-er but the counterfeits

often fracture like that. Does it have the weight?

If possible could you post a picture of the inside of the break?

Either way it's a fanstatic find.

I don't know about the Spanish silver but the American counterfeits

can far exceed their real counterparts in value. My 1813 counterfeit

Bust Half dollar is worth around a $1,000.00 and may be the only known example

since it's mention in Riddell's Monograph in 1845.

Any way, even if it is counterfeit, it's worth may suprise you.

Re: Watchu got...You ain't gonna believe this!

Thanks to everyone for they're replies, wether it's a counterfeit or not, I have no clue.
If it is ,it's better than the other three I have found.

IP ,I agree the date looks funny, the 2 especially. After looking for an exact match I noticed some with wide dates and some with tighter dates. To me the date is the only part of this coin that looks funny. If you see any other tell tale signs, please post them. I don't have a scale to weigh it but will try and find someone who does and get it posted.

Deno, here's a pic of the break, best I could do with the photo.

Great hunt HB. :icon_thumright: I can't imagine holding a hunk of silver like that. It's huge. :o
Good to see the Iron Brigade hunting together again. I just saw BB's post. His looks kinda puny beside yours. ::)
Regardless, I would still love to find either of those coins.
Good luck to the Iron Brigade.

The dots are nowhere close to being equally spaced from the date. The F is spaced too far from the E in Ferdin.

The break has little to do with determining if it's a counterfeit, but sure makes more sense once it's determined it is.

Re: Watchu got...You ain't gonna believe this!

Nice silver, congrats! Still looking for my first Spanish Dollar...
If CFT even rarer! Great Finds, Thanks for posting

Why would someone counterfeit a silver coin with silver? Doesn't make sense to me?
You have me convinced it's a counterfeit, and I'm with you, it's better than a real one.

Non silver metal used is to cheat the metal, and silver is to cheat the weight. I bet your coin is a little light (hard to determine that do to the hole), but also bet it doesn't meet the silver standard of an authentic 1821 8 reale. So in that case they'd be cheating both the metal and the weight to create a coin that obviously looked pretty good.... because it still does today.

Fascinating information at the above link! :read2:

The coin must be of the last type listed.

HB if you get more information, please pass it along to me. By the way, I think it's high time you made a post of your Four Counterfeit Big 8's. :icon_thumleft: Best Finds material, for sure!

Wouldn't the break reveal if it were plated or veneered, I tend to think it would.

I am no expert by any means, but that looks like solid silver to me.

Does it pass the ring test? I don't think they can fake that.

If it rings I would bet money it's silver. There is something

strange about that missing chunk, part of it looks worn inside

and some of it near the V looks fresh. I think that if it is fake

it is of the poured variety. It is a confounding piece.

Either way it is a great find.

My buddie Armstrong has a article in this months issue of W&E treasures

on funny money, check it out if you get a chance.

I believe it could easily be a % silver and a cast coin. It could be something like a silver-pewter mix which would explain why it kept the silver color and was also able to break.
