I've acquired some fine gold from a day down on the river and got it put in a vial. However, I'd like to get an idea how much gold we panned out.

I thought initially if I weighed the vial when full or water and then added the gold I'd get a rough idea, but I realized I was an idiot and didn't account for displacement.

How do you pros handle this?

If this has been discussed I apologize. Getting the search to work from Google can be tricky!

Thank you!

simple! Just empty your vial in a pan, pour off excess water, let the gold dry thoroughly, and then weight it.

If you don't put enough water in the vial so it is to the point that adding gold makes water run out, displacement is a moot point.
